Hi, i have not long bought an M reg 300tdi 90. Anyway, 1) when i select low range and then select 2nd gear for the first time it pops low range into neutral? Once you get going it stays in low range regardless then, it's just when you first select it.
2) When i come to a stop on a slope in 2nd gear and put the clutch down the main gear lever then pops out of 2 nd gear into neutral?? It only seems to do it on an uphill slope, which is possibly the worst place it could pop out of gear! I think it did it when i tried the same slope in high range second, just as a test.
Is my box knackered or is it something not so bad?
One guy has suggested the splines are badly worn on 2nd so that it can't hold itself in place when the tension is taken out of the drive?
Help!!!

Almost certainly, the problem is 'lack of exercise' - low range is the least used and it gets a bit gummed up - use it lots and it will get better - or you could squirt a load of troubleyoufree40 on the selector rod and give it a wiggle and all should be well ;)

Well it has only covered about 2000miles in the last 2 years or so with one bout off offroading for half a day by the previous owner.
Are you saying the box may be A okay and just lacking use?? If so that would be a Brucie Bonus saving me some wedge!!!!!

No idea without seeing the car - my 200tdi very rarely got to see low range as the previous owner thought that was 4WD  now it's being used propply it's as sweet as you like going from high to low - and it's a very low cost fix ;)

If it's jumping from low to neutral the most likely problem is the selector rod to the transfer box - it's either a bit gummed up (use some WD40 and wiggle the selector between hi and low) or the nuts need tightening.

I'm not saying it isn't shot - but that's defo the thing to check first!

This is the main box, and it isn't good news.

Get an exwerienced Landy Gearbox wallah to have a listen and try.

Start saving ....

Cheers Charlesey,
I have found a fairly local company who will exchange for just over £400 which isn't bad but it isn't great either, the box has got to come out anyway as the rear main oil seal has gone too! It's a shame really cos it doesn't crunch and it isn't a noisy box either but i just didn't know whether it was knackered or just not keeping gear because it had been sitting for some time not used.
Oh well

Take CARE!!!!!

The TRANSFER BOX is an entirely different thing from the GEARBOX.

Be sure you are getting the right thing changed, and do NOT go ahead with out a GUARANTEE in writing.

If it jumps out of "second gear" on the main gear lever that is GEARBOX.

If it jumps out of HIGH range or LOW range on the little gear lever that is TRANSFER box.

The two boxes happen to be bolted loosely together, but that is mere happenstance ....

Well i reckon the low range lever problem is purely from lack of use and my old defender used to be a bit fiddly when selecting low. I can live with that anyway, it's just the coming out of 2nd that i am not happy with, especially in that i will be trialling and laning and using 2nd all the time up slopes!

Just an update (late i know!)
Had a replacement gearbox and everything was fine, the hi/low problem was just lack of use. All the clunks i had when accelerating disappeared as well, it was the gearbox, worn out.
Fitted a cross drilled gear as well as the old shaft was rusty as hell.
