R380 Defender TD5 Box Woes

Evening all, hope youve all had a decent weekend.

I've got a 110 utility TD5 2006 and i think the layshaft bearings have gone.

Its a metallic chugging sound in 1,2,3 and 5 but not 4th - no layshaft involvement here i assume.

Its just happened while on my way home so about 40-50 miles worth, ive checked the oil and the level is good but a bit shiny! haha

My question is is it worth dropping and overhauling myself or just dropping in a recon box. On the subject of recon, does anyone have any recommendations apart from ashcrofts?

I need the machine for work so time is important, hence why im leaning towards a recon unit.

Any one have an experience from the V8 lower gear mod on a TD5?
