i dont know their reasons ,but from experience of stripping and rebuilding a large number ,both oils will lube bearings ,gears etc equally providing you dont leave oil in till its manky and well passed changing, engine oil would be as good lube isnt generally an issue with boxes which ever oil is used, thin oil gives better cooling which is why lr switched to atf in the lt77 ,from earlier uses of gear oil or engine oil, the issue is baulk ring to gear cone interaction the baulk ring has to scrape enough oil off to grip cone so brake gear ,but not all so its metal to metal and so premature wear, which will also occur if too thick an oil is used as you increase pressure to brake the gear, not allways but mtf94 tends to give better gear selection imo
