checked your oil levels in the g/box? sounds like it might be low to me

grating into fifth? Sounds more like internal problems to me.
Reverse is also usually stiff, as there is no synchro system. Make sure that your clutch hydraoulic system is all bled and adjusted properly, as this sounds more likely to me than the gear stick linkage.
