Quick Speaker Question

Hey all,

So I'm halfway through changing my interior over to full leather, and it came with the door cards with extra Harman Kardon speakers. On the front doors I can see the wiring for the additional smaller speakers, but on the rear passenger doors I can't seem to find anything? Should the wiring already be in place? Am I just being blind....

There are different door harnesses for different spec. vehicles.

Rather than hunting around for the correct rear door harnesses, it's probably easier to add the additional wiring.

Depending on what speakers you have on your new door cards, I may have the connectors to fit them, as well as the terminals to go into the door harness to main harness connectors.

Also, you'll need to check that the door harness mating connectors on the main harness have the additional speaker wires in them.

If not, they can also be added quite easily.

Paul - I have a pair of small rear door HK speakers number AMR5513. Do you have the connectors to fit these by any chance?

Does it have this type of connector on it? -



If so, yes, I have those -



I can supply them, as pictured above - or, pre-crimped and assembled to a twisted-pair of cables, which can have the door harness to main harness connector terminals on the other end.

If they have the other type of connector, I have those as well -



Which I can supply as connector and terminals, or pre-crimped and assembled to twisted-pair cables.

Amazing thanks for that. I hadn't realised there were different harnesses! So how would I go about adding the extra wiring? Also the extra wiring I had in the front didn't work which was no fun.
Chrimcne - thats the same as I have in the back.

You can do it a couple of ways -

1. Take the wiring from the speaker connector to the door harness to main harness connectors, and from there to the head unit or amplifier.

2. Take the wiring from the speaker connector, direct to the head unit or amplifier, bypassing the door harness to main harness connectors.

So let me just see if I'm understanding right, as I was working out a bodge at the weekend, which I think is number one. So there's the main speaker connection, for the lower one, in all 4 doors. And then run some wire from the lower one, to the higher one, but could do with having those connecters to avoid cutting or soldering! And to connect to the lower speakers I'm sure I remember seeing some spade connectors that looked spare. That would work?

i wouldn't mind two of the white ones, pre-crimped and assembled to twisted-pair cables assuming the price is right !

Will that be in series or parallel, and do u understand the implications on using either method?

In the Harman Kardan installation -

The front door's mid-range speaker is wired in parallel to the high-range speaker on the 'A' post trim.

The front door's low-range speaker is wired on its own circuit from the power amplifier.

The rear door's high range and low-range speakers are wired in parallel.

AFAIK, all of the different speaker types use one of the 3 different connector types pictured above, none use plain spade terminals.

Hi Chris,

The White 3-way connector, supplied with 2 x terminals, works-out at £2.00 + P&P.

If you wanted it pre-crimped and assembled to twisted-pair cables, that would add another £0.75 per metre.

Paul - I'll take 2 white connectors, pre-crimped and assembled to a metre of twisted-pair cables please.
How do we go about paying ?

Umm not sure, and no not really! That was another question I needed to ask haha.

Okay, so my front door mid-range doesn't work from the existing wiring, yet the high-range on the A post does? Any ideas why that might be?

Yeah they do all have those connectors, but I'm sure further down near the plastic there were some spade connectors with blobs of solder on (presumably to stop people using them) that could be used if necessary. Again I'm not sure about the difference between parallel/series and how you go about doing either.

Tweeter resistance, and capacitors and resistors in the tweeters feed to stop bass and mid bass reaching the tweeter.
As I don't have the time to start a master class on loudspeaker installation, I suggest u Google the subject for more info as its all there.
