Hi all,
My mother in law is borrowing a company land rover.
2010 defender, she's up in scotland with the snow.
she asked my if you have to stop to engage diff lock?
or can it be done whilst driving? if so, upto what speed is max for driving to engage it?

any one know?
thanks

no you can engage it whenever you like, just make sure the wheels are not slipping (at different speeds from each other). Take it out again when its not needed or it will wind up tight. If it wont come out again, you might need to reverse a little.

She will need to stop to drop it into Low range, you can change up to high range if youre not going too fast.

Can difflock up to whatever I believe 30Mph is reccomended by LR but any speed have done 60+ mph with difflock engaged. Also worth a note* you can do more damage not engaging difflock when you should than engaging it early. on any surface WHERE GRIP IS LIKLEY TO BE LIMITED. as in not tarmac but pretty much anything else.

Ye don't need tae stop, and ah'm sure it says summit about usin' it in 1st or 2nd... so ye won't be goin' that fast anyways! And like said above, knock it back out once yer on guid ground;)

Feburary I went to work and the alarm went off so i got in there pretty sharpish. a long gentle hill stopped all manners of motors I was heading up there at about 60 nothing in front of me for a mile then it goes over the downs a bit windy and some ice knocked in difflock at about 55/60 detroit locker rear and difflock makes the car feel so much more solid and I've YET to find anyone I honeslty believe have damaged their transfer box by solely leaving it engaged for too long and getting wind up. I have found many many people with broken centre diffs because they Have NOT engaged the difflock when they should and destroyed damaged it only to fail later on. Trans wind up can happen and will obviously accelerate wear components quicker however I honestly believe that wind up will only ever affect old shagged hanging trans boxes and those that are left in for many hundred if not thousands of tarmac/high grip sinareos. Most people on ere run offroad tyres and these Will chirp and lose traction way before damage is done. Which I must add should be noticed by any half decent driver and disengaged. Failing that LR even put a light on the dash for the less aware drivers. The scare moungers that read the manuals and quote LR recommedations only scare people into not operating their LR as it was intended and for correct use. After all Recomendations can be read and quooted by a 5 year old and are there to stop the numpties of the world that do not underatsnd or have any mechanical sympathy for their vehicles to safley operate their vehicle.
