Quick Question..Is it common to put 245/70/16 on a 300 TDi

As above, need to replace all 4, have 235 on there at the moment, but was going to put 245 on, same as a TD5.

Is it best to stay standard or a bit wider?

standard tyres on a disco 2 are 255/65r16 iirc

245/70 will be a little wider and taller than 235/70. Have a look at the sticky at the top of this section and you will find your answer

I am running on 245/75R16, and because I have heavy duty suspension (read 130 spec) the body has a lift of approximately 2"....the speedo now is accurate, and there's not great loss in accellaration....and maybe get a better MPG

...but u might lose some torque.....when i had bigger tyres hills that i used to climb on 2'nd i couldnt do just in 1'st........u lose some and get some...a better ground clearence and behaviour in sand/mud

not sure about the better mpg, mine eats more fuel on 265s than when i use my 205 road tyres. although the rolling radius is larger (lower revs for the same speed) there is also more resistance with a wider tyre.

true.

but tbh 245 will not be much different to 235. they will work out about 10mm wider and a little taller so shouldnt affect speedo too much but if you want something a bit better looking why not consider an AT tread pattern (still ok on road but can handle mucky stuff too)

true.

Thnaks for the advice guys, MyTyres are doing Cooper Discoverer 245/70/16 All Terrain for £90 a corner, as opposed to £97 for 235!

The reason I ask is my friend has a TD5, with the 245 on, and even just a few mm wider and taller, it looks a bit more purposefull. I have the deep dish alloys, with the same offset, so should be ok.
