Am replacin me swivel balls and bearings etc and am strugglin wiv a couple of things.

First off, which way up does the oil seal at the back of the swivel ball go?
Bothe Paynes and Rave are confoosin and appear to be at odds with the exploded diagram thet I've got.
Is it like this -

or like this -

Secondly, how difficult should it be to fit the Bush in the top of the swivel ball (the one that the top swivel pin turns in)? I've been batterin the fook out of it fer ages with a 4lb lump hammer and it aint goin no further than half way! I've got the "relieved" side facing inwards, like what Paynes says, but I'm afraid I'm gonna break sommat in a minute.

All help / suggestions and advice gratefully received.

From wot I remember when I did mine the seal stops the axle oil getting into the swivels so the open side should face inwards, cant tell from yer pics which one that is. An as fer yer top bush have yer tried measuring it to make sure it's bin made proply, they should be a tightish fit but not a 4lb hammer fit.

See, yer confoosin me more now, cos that sounds like the opposite of what Buster said.
I agree wiv yer logic though - it makes sense that it's to keep the diff / axle oil from getting into the swivels. In that case, it seems to me that the seal should be like in me bottom picture.
When yer say open side outwards, do yer mean towards the outside of the vehicle (i.e. into the ball) or towards the outside as I've photographed it (i.e. away from the ball)?

I dint I sed open side inwards so the flat face is towards the swivel I'll have a look at me pics but I'm sure there's another seal the opposite way round further out to stop the swivel oil from getting into yer axle.

Was confusing the second seal i was on about with the one on the outer half shaft, but the seal that fits in the back of he swivel housing has the open face towards the axle tube to stop axle oil getting into the swivel housing.

yeah same ones used a bigish hammer and just took time be careful not to damage inner edges of bush as pin needs smooth surface has your boy got a press at work cos that is much easier

For fitting the top bush on the swivels, i did a few using a vice to press them in ( if you have a big enough vice ) I cut a piece of tube to fit inside the swivel, from the top bush to the bottom bush, just to support it while its in the vice, would'nt try it without something inside or the swivel housing will bend or break. They are usually quite tight alright, hope this helps.
