question: air susp & pwr steering

Hey guys...

When I first got this rover I had a red fluid leak in the front behind the driver side headlight. It has stopped leaking so I am wondering what fluid is low. Below is a pic of my power steering fluid level, is it low?

Also a pic of the general area of the leak.

Also I have a feeling the air suspension is getting slower at raising. So my second question is does the air suspension use a fluid that is red like transmission fluid?


also the pic thats the general area of the leak - the leak is all over near the frame cant really tell in the pic - so it makes it hard to tell where its coming from

looks allright why dont you look at the stick on the cap it is marked,only gear box t/box and steering use atf

lol duh i didnt even think to look at the stick haha

ok there are 2 sections or 2 lines on the stick but no indicators saying what the level means. The fluid is halfway between the 2 lines on the stick.

and the air suspension uses - air!!

Are you a pessimist or an optimist?

lol im an optimist most of the time...and glad I could give you a laugh on the suspension - I am not a mechanic and I live in a small town and everyone is scared of land rovers...so I am kinda forced to try and figure out stuff myself...

closest mechanic that would even consider working on a land rover(that I would trust) is about 2.5 hours away

based on the my fancy microsoft paint drawing is the fluid low? p.s. engine is cold

The level is fine, you can top it to the upper mark if you want to.

In which case if you are suspicious about your suspension taking longer to rise then I'd start investigating now. With a bit of luck it's 'just' your compressor wearing out. If it is and you repair or replace it now then you could save yourself from having to recover from a hard fault.

Start with the Wammers compressor test and seriously consider, at least, Datatek's software & connection lead. If you treat the suspension as a system that requires servicing rather than waiting for it to fail you can save yourself a lot of grief.

If the power steeing fluid is ok - which it seems to be - it can only be gearbox fluid? Does the autobox have a cooler with pipes to the front (just guessing as new to RR's myself).
But red fluid = ATF which must be one of those two

Yes - see the two pipes in the side of cooler in your photo? Follow them and you run into tranny sump

If it takes longer to rise and the airsprings are original, I'd be looking at leaking airsprings.

you said you think your air suspension is getting slower?

it could be the seal on the piston in the compressor thats worn that slows the suspension down i have done them in both of my p38s
