Hello,

I am hoping to revert the ECU map file in my 2004 TD5 Defender to the stock file (the previous owner did a remap).

I will be using a Nanocom Evolution, and it is recommended that I attach a battery charger with a supply function to the Defender's battery in order to prevent any loss of communication due to voltage drops.

I have a CTEK MSX 5.0 but it does not have a supply mode.

What is the minimum amperage charger you would recommend for a reliable supply whilst remapping? And is CTEK the brand to go for?

Thanks.

I would be happy with the ctek, might be worth plugging in into the car and just seeing what voltage its chucking out.
I use a cheapo aldi 3.8amp version when doing the same on the D3.

What's wrong with the remap does it smoke too much? You might find it a bit lacking in standard tune.
My first remap, done by Alive, smoked too much but it's now been done by Dynachip and while not as much power as the Alive one, it doesn't look like a smoke grenade has been set off behind when you floor it.

Tom as you say the charger is to stop any voltage drop when installing the new map this could be caused by something activating (like an electric cooling fan) when you are in the processes. Firstly make sure your battery if fully charged and if you have access to a second fully charged battery this also will serve to stabilise the voltage (without a charger) should the first battery have an unexpected call on it.

I had the exact same thing a few years ago on a td5 disco, went like the wind but the smoke was unreal!

Thanks Tim and lynall, I'll see if I have another battery lying around and also check the voltage of the current battery.

With regards to lightning's question about the remap, there is indeed a lot of smoke. And I have a feeling that in the long run (and I mean very long run), it may be better for the engine not to be remapped. I also don't really need any extra performance for what I'll be using it for.

Cheers.
