Just a quick question, with the front prop off my 90 will the wheels then 'freewheel' and the crown wheel on the diff be inactive, or will the whole gear assembly within the diff still turn due to the road wheels? Trying to pinpoint potential damage to my crown wheel and hoping that this will save me having to pull the diff out until Saturday when I've got time.

With the prop off, the gears would still turn as you turn the wheels.

If you lift both wheels off the ground , then you should be able to turn the input flange, see both wheels turn, and get an idea of crownwheel problems without the diff clouding the "feel"

Thats because the wheel on the other side is turning opposite way to the one you are turning, with the prop off the diff and all its gears will indeed turn as you drive along.

if your driving in a straight line diff gears should remain stationary in diff carrier hough diff carrie is rotating with crown wheel, if you have pinion bearing issues diff should whine on over run with prop connected quiter with it off.damage to cw or pinion would be noisy all the time but worse on power and over run again less with prop off

The diff is ####ed, to put it bluntly lol. The flange won't turn whatsoever and with prop on it is very very noisy and struggles to move. Took prop off and the front wheels turn freely. Got new diff now so that will be fitted next weekend

diff flange wont turn with 1 or both wheels up ?

Haven't had a check yet to be honest as I've been busy but with both wheels on the ground it used to have a little bit of rotational play but now there's no movement whatsoever. When prop is on and I try to drive there is a very loud 'ratchet' the sound of gears on gears

If you need to move a landy with a foooked diff still in place then remove prop and remove the bolts from drive flanges to hub's, there will be some oil loss but nothing will move inside the axle.Driving with a busted diff still connected can result in bits busting out of the casing as they jam up.

Sounds although you have done a crown wheel to me.

You keep doing diffs take your foot off the gas!!! Hehe!!! Or get them Pegged!!

I know, been there done that :D

I do think its the crown wheel but will know for definite when I get it out. And my first one went through no fault of my own. This one however I've no idea what's caused it, unless when Doc Evil and I have repaired the diff pan after smacking it off road the inside has been catching on the crown wheel but surely it wouldn't take this long to show up? I needed to change my axle casing anyway so no worries :D

Rather than start a new thread ill just use this one. Had both wheels up earlier and they rotate completely independently of each other, as opposed to opposite rotations as they should when you turn a wheel. Pinion has no rotational movement whatsoever whereas even when both wheels were on the ground before it would rotate slightly. Surely both halfshafts haven't snapped at the exact same time and if so why wouldn't the pinion move? Also leading up to the diff going completely I believe this was the source of my vibration and on the day it did go I just lost all drive, tried to move in gear and it struggled to the point that it stalled. I finally got it going and it really struggled before the diff just went completely and now if I were to drive with prop on I get a very loud ratchet sound of gears on gears and it struggles to move. This was with the gearbox and transfer box in neutral. Got new diff to put in but just wondering if ill have to buy new halfshafts too
