That was the case a few years back, but they realised they were losing out on subscriptions so most car's are accepted now .... they accepted our Disco and it's nearly 16 yrs old.

and your service book is fully stamped by "approved" garages - even after 15 years ?

Funnilly enough it is;), but the more mechanically minded I'm getting the less I'm using my local indy. Probably won't re-new it in the summer though.
 
I had this for my Disco. Somewhere about Durham going round a roundabout there was a noise coming from the back passenger side wheel. I stopped, called the AA guy out as I had their full cover also. He checked it over and took it for a drive and said he couldn't find anything wrong with it and sent me on my way. Further up the road I got the worse it got. When I got home I called the AA and explained what had happened. They told me they would get someone to call me and said it was safe to continue using the car as a mechanic had already examined it. Between calling out the AA man at Durham and getting a call back I had racked up 1000 miles. I was told to take it down to a Nationwide Auto Centre for inspection and if it turned out the wheel bearing was at fault they would replace it (less excess). Needless to say the bearing was ****ed and with the LR centre a hundred yards away they were able to get a new one and fitted the same day. I paid £65 or whatever it was for the cover but the rear hub cost in excess of £350 so it paid for itself on that one claim alone. (I think you are allowed 3 claims a year and you can only claim for parts/repairs where it effects the roadworthiness of the car). The AA do stipulate that you have to have the car serviced regularly and any repairs that they wouldn't cover have to be done by a professional fully registered mechanic. You can opt to take the car for repair to any professional mechanic as long as they are vat registered. Most garages I know I went too and they wouldn't entertain me due to the fact the AA are notoriously slow at paying. They would only fix it if I could pay them myself and claim the money back from the AA. As I didn't have that kind of money at the time and after explaining it to the guy who gave me a call back he suggested Nationwide Auto Centres as I wouldn't need to pay them as they are in some kind of partnership. Labour can also be claimed for as well as parts up to a max of £500. I can't remember what the excess is.

Anyway, my nice shiny new hub was fitted and I drove round the corner to my flat to put stuff in the boot to go to mums for the weekend. Hopped in the car, 2 miles down the road the bearing in the shiny new hub collapsed :doh::doh: I pulled over and looked under the car to see oil ****ing everywhere. :(

3 hours later a tow truck finally arrived to get me, by this time it was too late to go back to the garage and the two truck driver said there was no room in his yard and would have to dump it back in Nationwide Auto Centres car park :doh: which just happens to be in one of the rougher parts of town where cars get set on fire frequently. :(

thanks, i see they include the following exemptions from their cover

- doesn't includes mechanical breakdowns caused by wear and tear

- or breakdown due to lack of maintenance

that's 2 pretty compelling reasons why they could refuse almost any claim unless you can prove otherwise
just fit ****part, when they fail for no reason after 6 weeks you'll be covered.
 
If it costs more than £500 you pay the extra. So even if you did go down that route you are still saving 400 and odd pounds. :)
