Morning folks, I'm in a bit of a quandary about some welding that needs to be done on my newly acquired td5 disco chassis, Do I pay someone to do it for me as someone who welds for a job should be able to complete it a lot quick than me, enabling me to get on with other things that need doing? Or do I put the money I would spend on some one doing the welding on buying a plasma cutter to make life easier for my self?

Has any one else been in this situation? I have chassis and an outrigger that needs completely rebuilding :-(

Cheers Gareth

There some hard to get nooks Above the axle on the inside of the chassis and a rear body out rigger that has one side of it completely missing, do you have any suggestions for good tools that you can use to prepare hard to get to places for welding ie can't get a grinder in to?

spot blaster kit, from ukhs (not a shot blaster, cost about £25)

its messy and uses a lot of shot for not much area but its good for getting into hard to reach areas, I used it quite bit on the 72.

you will need to get a bag of shot off ebay if your doing much at all though as I went through the two post it comes with in about 2 mins lol

if you have a welder I could do it yourself as garages charge a lot for welding and always do it the easy way, not the right way!

Plasma cutters definitely make easy work of cutting steel, but you do need a compressed air source if it doesn't have a compressor built in.

Of course you also need a compressor for the spot blaster to. If you go this route, scrape as much mud/crap off first, as the abrasive doesn't clear it half as well as you'd imagine.

There seems to be quite a difference between someone who welds for a living and a mechanic with a welder. The later isn't necessarily any better than you at welding. As fett says, they will do the quickest way regardless. I've seen some shocking stuff from some places.

As for the outrigger, id buy the made up parts that just need welding on, rather than fabricate.

yeah buy the outrigger, not sure what car you drive but I am a classic man but the outriggers are listed as disco1 on paddocks if it helps.

plasma cutters a pricey bit of kit and I just rebuild a whole rrc 2 door without one so it might be a bit ott. a cengar and a grinder might be all you need for that job! depends on your budget I guess.

some of the **** I have seen on cars , like my 4 door when I got it, they hadnt wanted to take the plastic sill trim cover off for an mot weld Im guessing so the tucked the steel between the two and welded it at the bottom only, ie only one side of four of the plate were welded ffs
