Hi

Looking at buying the above - just wondering if there is anything I should look out for and, does it have a cambelt, and how often does it need changing?

Maybe hanging out on this forum in the next few weeks!!!

Thanks in advance

Shawn

LOL - thanks for that. Cheered me up no end.
Any serious answers.
PS - it is for the wife - my other car is an Alfa GT!

:)
Does that mean there are serious issues with them?
dunt listen to this lot shawn ,theys wot we call tratter boys, [like red necks] ,sept fer the one wiff the silly hat ,eze er slitty owner spit!!!!shorry bout thet i gits all emulsion un fings the td4 is a great motor really good orft road un even better on tarmac ,very good mpg a few silly issues but most covered on this forum. . . . . .good choice earthling :) :) :)

Lets be honest. if you want reliabilty by something jap.
What can you expect from something built by bearded, ale drinking communists.

freelanders are no more problematic than a defender or discovery.

What a Landrover does is create and air of nostalgia only available by having the green oval. However I love them!! they do break a lot! however they are cheap to fix.

the freelander is the one the proper offroaders forget about or more likely would like to.

However i feel they are missing the point, the only seroius issuie i feel is the clutch, lucky if you get 60K out of it. tyre wear is outstanding michilins can get you about 55K we have just changed the wife's and i didnt care about the cost at that milaege. apart from axle articulation you will get everwhere a defender will and further if it is really soft.

I scum the nuts of the wifes when i borrow it and it still does 36ish mpg.
a little boaty, but it makes my disco 2 td5 seem very slow. although the td5 with ace corners shockingly well.

the build quality isnt great but its a landrover. to sum it up we bought ours new in 2003 it has done 60K now and it needs a clutch, aprt from a split hose done under warranty its been fualtless. dont let the early horror stories put you off.

looks better than a poncy rav4 or x-trail, if you dont care about mpg then a late model td5 discovery with ace and air is a very nice ride.
Oh and just to **** of the lr3 owners it corners better. they have toned down the ace to let you know when your cornering to hard. Think ill be the judge of that.

I heard bearmach are doing an antiroll bar kit for the freelander which apparently makes it feel a bit more like the freelander sport, which i found very nice to drive.

lastly the autobox is nice but i found it made it significantly slower especially top end.

thats my 2 pence :)

i didn't know we had an author as a member!! do you ever write any non-fiction?

Sorry will try to keep the posts down to easily understandable short sentances.:D

twas not the length of yer post twas the amount of fiction it contained

such as

"freelanders are no more problematic than a defender or discovery"

Hi Shawn,

I've currently got an 05 plate TD4, great little motor.

Had a few of them in the past including running 3 of them as promotional motors all of which easily covered in excess of 100K over a 3yr period without any major issue.

Yeah they can have small teething problems but so do most cars.

Hope this helps.

having had my 2001 td4 for 3 years, i can only report back good things,

handles very well and a pleasure to drive, cruises effortlessly 80 - 90 and still got loads left, returns 37mpg on most runs , tyres last me 35k i do my own servicing, its all quite straight forward, a few minor niggles but nothing serious or costly so far ,body work still looks mint .

i think the earlier models with the petrol engines gave the freelander a bad reputation,

td4 BMW engine is without doubt a great motor and the freelander a capable alrounder , drive the motor and make you own mind up ,
