Hmm not a good day, having failed to replace my steering shaft (another post) I spent the last 15 mins of the afternoon doing the 'pump tweak'...but failed again as it didn't make a s!*te of difference!

I've held off until today turning the pump up because I've always thought I had a 'problem' that was causing the poor performance, but after replacing the fuel filter, sedimenter, lift pump, intercooler hoses..I thought sod it, lets do it.

I did the smoke screw awhile ago but today I turned the diaphram 90 degrees and the star wheel a complete turn, started her up and set off with great expectations...but I didn't notice any difference????

/\ /\ /\ WHS. Do it a bit at a time, mine didn't seem much different then boom, it went just like that, I use to struggle up slight inclines at 60, now it will cruise at 8o, mine smokes like a bitch tho now, I shall be turning it down a bit later as its got a long journey comin up and does 15mpg!

You need to make sure your 90 degree turn was the right way, land rover in their infinite wisdom set these things in all sorts of positions, not to mention previous fiddlers! and tick marks dont always line up where they are supposed to.
If you pull the diafram and look on the spindle for the pin score mark and the steepest side it will give you an idea how and where it started (you should always mark everything anyway) a turn of about 40 degrees can make the difference between loads of power and loads of smoke, too much smoke is just wasted unburnt fuel and overfueling can actually make you loose power

My advice once the spindle is set so you know which way to turn, turn it in little bits until it starts to smoke and then back it off until it doesnt.

The pin on the diaphragm has a maximum point and if you go too far it will be just like backing it off so you might be back to square one.
You need to look at it and set it so the bit of the diaphragm pin that is nearest the edge faces the throttle pin in the bottom of the pump where youve taken the diaphragm out of (faces towards the front of the pump) if it smokes too much then you can back it off by moving it either way.

Hello there before you adjust your inj pump it may be a good idea to check your pump timing !! a small adjustment here can transform power delivery and the amount of smoke from ya pipe !! Think about it?? advance or retardation of the inj pump equals poor performance and or fuel usage!! puting more fuel in is not always the way . it must be put in at exactly the right time or it may give adverse effects such as lower power and smoke ..

mine has more power and more smoke:p:D

This is what's confusing as mine doesn't have any smoke, it's as clean as a whistle? Maybe I've turned it too far then as suggested? The 'pop' mark was originally at about 6 o'clock and I've turned it to abouts 10 o'clock posistion, the star wheel was one full turn. I've marked everything so will have another go...

What does your pop mark actually line up with?
For instance if i set my spindle for max fuel delivery the pop mark is at about 11 oclock max fuel being at 3 oclock which is pointing to the front of the car
The pop marks are not always over the max fuel delivery point

hi guys what do you think your averaging mpg wise with the pump turned up? been thinking of doing this for a while and ive got a week off and nothing to do so might do it

Boost pressure varies with old age. If you're low on boost you can't adjust it as far before it smokes! Cos there's less oxygen to burn the fuel. Ideally you check and, if necessary, adjust the boost pressure before tweaking the pump! Also clean out the inter cooler and make sure the egr is either ok or blanked. Adjusting the star wheel too much and it will make them smoke cos it adjusts when the boost fuelling comes in. It can take a lot of trial and error on some. Then others are great pretty much after the first attempt. All the adjustments do very different things it makes it easier if you brush up on them before you do it. And mark everything so you can put it back if you have to!
