Propshaft shakes

hola. i recently replaced both UJ's on the front prop of my '94 300tdi disco and since ive been getting horrible shakes at 30 and 65 mph. we had quite an issue with getting the splines back together on the shaft as my friend in his haste detached them before i could mark them, so we tried to get them back together every way but ended up resorting on putting one end on the ground, a block of wood on the top and persuading it back together with a hammer. i doubt its coincidence but have I ruined the new UJ's, knocked the prop out of balance or is something else wrong?

probably out of line ,and seized slide will effect diff and t/box bearings .you will either have to try and clen up splines and fit properly or fit new as i would

ere James - checked front prop today - it moves thru about 45degrees into transfer box

. prop ok - but i reckon its intermediate gear - yes?

is there any way to be able to tell which way they should fit? i noticed in the sleeve there was a larger space between two splines but couldnt fine any other relation to the male part?

rotationally do you mean ,if so front diffs got some wear too , t, box most likely center diff ,you would need to feel diff through both props to know if it was center diff or gears

i should have said - it was by rotating one front wheel, so play is all in boxes

not unless it has marks on both halfs,normally props would have both inner yolks in the same plane but on front lr put them out of line one or two splines with a good prop ive started straight and tried it then moved one spline and retest till good but your splines are poor and are hard to make better

If you've bashed it back together it will be the slide being stiff giving the vibration..

well im doing a BEng in off-road vehicle design at university, but nothing compares to experiance which i clearly lack being only 19

If you look carefully you may spot the alignment marks, little arrows stamped into the prop and the yoke.

Small arrows, badly stamped, on a dirty prop. Ideal

well i managed to get it off yesterday. just gotta try and separate the pig now so i can refit it the way it should be

Hold long part of shaft in a bear hug style and carefully but brutally **** the fixed yoke of the short end with a lump hammer til it pops out. Be careful not to damage the grease seal or retainer.

OR fit the yoke through a convienent gap and then twist, then use the long end of the prop like a slide hammer to yank it off the short bit.

there isnt a grease seal left on it any more, before i got hold of it mind.

No matter how we try we cant get it to just slot nicely together. is it a case of persudaing it in with a bit of weight of should it be easy?
if so any tips on how to?

Just had a look at the under side of the male spines, white mark was made on one part. thought "hmmmm... should i try lining that up with the missing spline?" *thunk* jobs a goodun
