I have had to remove the propshaft on ma freelander TD4 2004 due to it failing, what happen was it was replace by Arnold Clark in Jan 2009 under warrancy it went thru its mot last month and it was notice the the propshaft bearings had alot of play in them so I replace them got put back together and all it did was tried to shake its self to bits tried taking it off again think out of balance and back on and the same now so I can use it have had to remove it and it drives great the best since buying it, My question is can it run it in this mode without killing it. Landrover want nothing to do with the shaft failing after it has been on the car more than 2 years. Any help on this would be great as I am hearing all sorts of horror stories.

I dislike driving FL1's without the prop on, but if you like it, then its upto you :)

(on a note, the FL2's drive horrible without a prop as well , even though JLR sell it as much :p ).

Also , i have never heard of getting excessive play in a prop bearing..... cause they are supported on bushes. I've seen lots of bushes splitting, i had prop bearings go causing driveline noise, but not excessive play. I'm also thinking you cant fail an MOT on prop bushes as they arent required for MOT and also they cant go anywhere, so cant become insecure.

Have you checked to make sure the unions on the props, where they join onto the VCU are aligned? I'm not sure how much of a difference this would make, but its how they should be.

Have you checked that the bearings are located fully onto the stops / dust covers, if you replaced them and didnt properly seat them, i guess they could be out of true?

Come again I took it you removed the propshaft replace the bearings put it back together and then got on. Seems I think there is more to this than meets the eye.
Were will I find the right info to put this back together right. (Apart for giving up a arm & Leg to sort it).

When putting prop shaft back on the hippo, you have too make sure that the bearings are square to the vcu when you tighten up the nuts holding them in place.
it's simple to do ...just get a ruler and measure from either side of the casing of one of the bearings back to a flat point either side of the vcu. When they measure the same on both sides ......the bearing will be correctly fitted, then just repeat for the second bearing..
If you have a haynes manual it's in there.
