Propshaft nut & bolt replacements - are they special?

Does anyone know if the earliest land rovers used whit nuts and bolts on the propshaft?. I'm told it is a 5/16 whit but need confirmation if possible before sending the tool off to Aus.

9/16 with nylocks renew every time and get yourself a prop tool, so much easier.

If you are thnking of swapping the bolts for metric screws ... DON'T!!!

Most standard metric stuff are screwed along the full length and are not shouldered!

Bolts have a specific shoulder length for their purpose, which is why the propshafts efffectively have a solid bar with a thread at one end, coupling the flanges together and then tightened down!

Thanks for the advice. I've been asked to supply a prop shaft tool but the buyer insists the nuts/bolts are 5/16 whit (Possibly why he came to us as we specialise in Whit and BSF tools) From memory I though even on the early Land Rovers they were 9/16 AF. I can source long waisted sockets in 5.16 whit but wanted to check with users on here if my thinking that isn't the right size is correct.

Please do not supply Whit as they would have been either UNF or BSF.

The coarse thread are for 'holding' whilst the fine threads are for clamping!

Google the development of Whitworth screw threads.

Whitworth and BSF use the same tools (sockets and spanners),so if the nuts and bolts are BSF then whitworth spanners would be exactly right. BSF or British standard fine is in reality a version of BSW (British standard whitworth) with more threads per inch (TPI)..
If however,the nuts and bolts are UNF then AF tools would be needed.
