Propshaft conundrum

Hi all,

I'm replacing the rear prop on my 200tdi 110, and have watched this vid:

At 4minutes 30secoonds in, it states that on Land Rovers Rear Props, the yokes on either end should line up.

HOWEVER I've just been and looked at the prop I took off, and the handbrake end is about two or three splines offline with the diff end! I've tried to fit the new prop with the yokes in line, but then it won't fit, as the bolt holes don't line up!

So what I'm wondering, is shall I bolt on the new prop with the two yokes slightly mis-aligned like the old one was, or do I need to adjust the handbrake drum, or something so that the bolt holes align with the yokes in line????

turn the flange with your hand. if it's too hard, then jack the back and turn a wheel.

the prop shafts on all vehicles are balanced from the factory with the yokes/flanges in line. they are balanced to stop vibration

put some good wheel chocks under the wheels first
put gearbox and tranfer box in neutral
then you can release the hand brake and rotate to fit

rear prop should have the yokes inline its the front prop thats out of phase 30 degrees ish,because rear has t/box and diff flange parallel front they are not as front diff flange is angled upwards

I gather its 90deg or 45, not 30, James. See above

not 90 ,30-45 for a std landy,each vehicle would have its sweet degree ofphase depending on angle

So after reading that nicely attached document
It seems to me that if you have a lifted motor with no caster correcting on it you front flanges are at different angles so you should out of phase your prop
This could cut down on overrun death wobble where the prop is driving back rather than being driven through

Is there an easy way to determine the correct phase of the prop or is it really just trial and error?

Cheers mad hat man. I must admit, I had no idea that this whole issue is called phasing, and having read what you posted it is a whole lot clearer.

It's a 110, I'm working on, and my front prop is indeed out of phase.

The rear prop I removed is one spline out of phase, and I initially fitted my rear prop in the same way. However, having read what you posted, and also going by what the video mentions; I will refit the rear prop in phase, and see if I get vibration in it over the weekend. If so, I will remove and replace one spline out of phase, and continue until the vibration ceases.

I think that's the way to go about it? Cheers for your help.

Not exactly, but when a fairly simple topic has been covered dozens of times, there is only so much that people can say

Do a search FFS!, used to be a common post in these cases, seems to have gone out of fashion a bit now.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. lol Simple human nature. Personally I'm not one to belittle somebody because they don't know something, but I'm also not taking the moral high ground attitude that we should all show each other 'respect'. We're all big boys.

In fairness, before posting I spent a good half hour googling and looking on this forum for a definitive answer, but as is so often the case on none of the 20 or so threads I read, did I find a consistent right answer. Just alot of conflicting information. There's no issue with **** taking in the slightest so please continue

But a consistent definitive answer like the one jamesmartin gave me was what I was hoping for.
