Propshaft Catching Bolts

I finally got around to replacing my speedo cable this morning.

Whilst underneath I check the UJ's and was shocked to find the front transfer box end to be close to failure! It wasnt like that last month when I put it on!

It appears to have been bottoming out on the end of the bolt which has put increased load on the UJ. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes mate. Will upload tomorrow when I get back to work... had to use the train! Much to everyone's amusement!

Either cut a few mms of the end of the bolts or fit shorter ones, few minutes with hacksaw/grinder sounds like the quick answer to me.
Were they new bolts or the existing ones?

Existing- they are the ones on the transfer box end that can't be removed without taking off the flange.

Nope. It was the original prop. I've put brand new suspension components on when I rechassised it but nothing else has changed.

I'm hoping that when the UJ **** itself it had more flex and then started to catch??

DID you lift it when you did suspension ??

Highly likely that the uj wore out causing it to bang against your nuts

Do you think? I hope so... I hope it's as simple as putting a new prop on!

It can only be that the UJ was Nackt that caused it ! Can't think of any other cause !

The fact that it's only just catching makes me feel slightly better!

I'm hoping the end of that bolt can be cleaned up so I can get a new nut on it.

CUT 1 of your old nuts & use as a die !

That looks like the UJ failed and started smacking the bolts to me. Same happened on my Disco

As others said - fit a hacksaw blade through the nut and cut a diagonal slot in the nut threads. Clean the bolt end up best you can with a triangular needle file to get some thread back and then run the nut down it.

New prop is on. Looks to be miles away from the bolt... will continue to monitor it closely... will Jack up the front end next time I'm home and ensure its not catching when articulated.
