Hi All,

Ive bought a full set of UJ's for each prop, I bought GKN products (so no cheap rubbish)

Front is fully rebuilt but the rear is a different matter...
Although they press in, they appear too long as (is flush with the outside of the housing and no chance of getting the clip in

I didn't think there was any difference in UJ's - could I have an earlier prop on the rear or something?

Cas is a 1986 LR90

Thanks

Chris

You may just have the wrong one's,On a vehicle that age you just do not know what others have fitted in the past. One or other of the shafts is not original.
Also check needle rollers in cap have not tumbled restricting the fitting of bearing cap.

What do they measure, end of cap to other end.

There have been a few previous discussions on here , try doing a search for UJ size or similar.

I thought there were two different sizes available. I thought they changed at a given year, but as tottot said, you never know what a PO has done in the past.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice, I originally thought I had dropped a needle roller but have now confirmed the rear prop is a different bearing size to the front

Fronts - 82mm
Rears - 75mm

So a prop has been changed over the years - I shouldn't have been so presumptuous in the first place I guess...

Chris

No, your prop has not been changed if your vehicle is an early one, the two different sizes on the same vehicle came factory fitted as standard.
The small Uj's are classed as ''heavy duty'' , by the way, Gkn are not what they used to be and Hardy Spicer no longer sell drive shafts. This was an EMail I received from Hardy Spicer Australia.

''
Thank you for your enquiry. We do not supply Landrover shafts to anyone outside of Australia; in fact, we do not even stock them. Our service centres just build to order or repair the existing driveshaft, as these are not a common item in our part of the world.

If these driveshafts are not being supplied by GKN Driveline (was previously Hardy Spicer Driveline), then there are a few sources that could sell these as genuine Hardy Spicer shafts.

Hindustan Hardy Spicer Ltd (HHSL) in India makes the genuine Hardy Spicer / GKN Universal Joints and 1300 & 1310 series driveshafts under licence to GKN. Their U/Joints are packaged in the green Hardy Spicer boxes so I assume that their complete shafts would also be branded as Hardy Spicer. Companies in the UK such as IMS & Bailey Morris import from HHSL and my colleague, who has just recently visited HHSL, advises that they do sell to Brit part. HHSL is predominantly an OE supplier to Indian and other vehicle manufacturers with only a small part of their business being for the aftermarket.

Another supplier worth looking at for Landrover shafts is Adroit Industries, also from India. They have a wide range of Landrover shafts. Generally, they use GMB, NEAPCO or Wanxiang (WGC) U/J’s, but will use whatever joints you want to specify assuming the volume is acceptable. They do not make their own joints. In our opinion, the Adroit quality, under their new owners, is better than HHSL. Adroit is an aftermarket supplier only.

We trust that the above information is useful.''
