As above, anyone know what size replacement UJs I need?
I've got all paranoid looking at the damage caused to other motors just recently.
Er indoors has the motor for the week while I fix hers so I cant measure them and she told me to f**k off when I asked her to get under it with the tape measure. Lovely she is.
It has the original standard props as fitted when new.
Cheers

Can you not just give you parts supplier your vehicle details etc. They should then be able to source the correct parts.

Sounds simple enough but they say many Landrovers are fitted from new with whats available and not necessarily what the book says. Its not that uncommon to have different sized props front and rear from the factory.
The only way to be sure is to measure the old ones which I cant do until next week.

but you said

"It has the original standard props as fitted when new"

therefore the parts manual will tell you .......

They are original as far as I know. The previous owner never changed them. The supplier says that LR often fitted what ever they had to hand in the parts bin which is what causes the confusion. Sounds a lot like British Leyland in their hey day.
I guess I'll have to wait and measure the little buggers. Here's hoping they dont go bang before I can change them.

I thought there was a normal and heavy duty type-but could be wrong

STC4807 for the front (maybe the back) - I am sure of it, but you got me doubting myself now in case you get them then shout at me!

I think you need to wait till her indoors brings it back - what you doing letting her take it anway?

A whole week of doing what I like when I like with no lists of jobs to do around the house and watching what I want to on the goggle box was worth going without me motor for a week. :D

Get underneath and measure the width across the outside of your propshaft yokes.
If it's about 93mm, you have the earlier type and need UJ part number RTC3346.
If it's about 87mm, you have the later type and need UJ part number RTC3291.

Found this on another forum and was wondering if its true.
I ask because the prices vary for the different part numbers.
--------- snip -------------
- 75mm UJs: RTC3291, RTC3458, RTC4587, TVC100010 - they're all interchangeable with each other and should fit all original 200/300 tdi Discovery and the front UJ on both front and rear Discovery 2 propshafts - the TVC100010 being the latest and most desirable version.
--------- end snip ------------------

Right, got me motor back and had a crawl underneath. The yokes measure virtually dead on 87mm so I guess I need the smaller 75mm UJs.
I used a G cramp and then measured the gap once I got out from under as I dont have any proper measuring callipers.
TCV100010 seem to be the kiddies so where is the cheapest place to buy four genuine GKN/Hardy Spicer ones with nipples? :p

Also spotted some gear oil leaking from the back end of the gearbox so I'll be needing an oil seal before to long. :(

Had a proper measure and also spoke to LR who confirm that my TD5 90 has the same size UJs on both front and rear props. 75mm across the caps.
Part No. RTC3458 superceded by the TCV100010 UJs. (Why dont they just give the later code?)
Apparently post 2001 TD5s have wider UJs on the front props Part No. STC4807 and the TVC100010s on the rear. LR were unable to explain why this is so. The STC4807s are almost double the price of the earlier UJs. Maybe thats why?

Having done some serious web surfing I managed to find a site selling genuine GKN TVC100010s for £9.95 + vat which is about the same as the Britpart UJs that you can get almost anywhere.

Dingocroft (Penn Rental Service Ltd t/a) Online Catalogue

Most of the other suppliers of the GKN UJs wanted from £18 to £32 each. I'd love to know how much they pay for them.

So my project for this weekend is to give the props a good clean, re-spray them, change the UJs, regrease and use new gaiters and flange bolts in time for the winter.

All of this because I saw the damage caused when a UJ lets go and the fact that I've got sideways play in both transfer box UJs when I wiggle them.
