Prop shaft UJ,s

Used GKN 3 times previously and seem well made, good value (£15?? ish.....) - they just don't like having one of the rollers pinched into the cup on assembly........ don't ask how I know (it was a friend who did it not me) ...... covered 20k before the odd noises caused me to have a squint.

Came with new nipples, and none of the cups ever cracked on assembly - even with a roller out of place. A
 
I have a GKN replacement to fit to the front prop,
I did the rear ones last year and they seem ok but has anyone else used another part company for uj other than GKN?

Just bought Bearmach UJs at £7 for my spare front prop; haven't fitted them yet but they appear well made + they come with grease nipples.

+1 bearmach. I think I paid 8 pound for 2 off ebay with free postage. Been on a year with heavy use and still good:)
 
well it was the GKN i fitted 30kmiles ago that failed so prehaps i will fit it a bit more carefully this time....

the other ones i did are fine so it must of been me pinching it or summat...

Or go through less puddles and get under and grease it more oftern lazy ;)

well it was just 1 bearing on the uj that had failed,dry as a bone but the other 3 were good,must of pinched the seal and stopped it gettin greased or summat,

had a look but short of cross sectioning the uj its self i will never know,

Dought it the seal will stop water dirt ect and when you grease its inside out if that makes sence :)
 
I had one once where the grease channels in the 'spider' weren't quite drilled all the way through. So you could pretend to pump grease in but it wouldn't get to the rollers. This was on a Morris Oxford rather than a Land Rover. But maybe the same thing could happen.
 
i just dont under stand why just 1 of the 4 bearings has failed and quite obviously not got any grease on it but the other 3 have been maintained to a good standard,its 6 months old.....:confused::confused::confused:

Bob when greasing ever noticed it only comes of say two or three the reason is dried grease inside allowing the grease to only flow out of the un- dried up ones leaving old grease c in to long can cause this also when putting the last cup in on both axis its pushed too hard to get circlip in :)

this is what i reckon...cant be arsed to cut it open.ill try poke a wire through in the morning,its in the scrap bin,,,,:D

i aint bothered for 15quids,new 1 went in fine and straight and greased ok .:)

yep,
i grease weekly and so on....

i am fine fitting and it was not tight after fitting,i pressed it very gently.:)
 
stick pleanty of grease in the cups to hold the rollers in whilst assembling... take the grease nipple out whilst sticking it together so the excess can come out the nipple hole and it should last ages on the assembly grease .
regreasing is then more to push water out after wading rather than to rectify a lack of grease.

yep,i left the nipple out untill it was together,i also remembered to line up all the grease nipples.

il look at the old 1 in the daylight.
