Hi,

I have now had the prop fitted to my freelander... and I have done the 'tippex test' last night, and niether bits were where they were before.. so, I am guessing its passed that... BUT...

It feels completely different, which of course I expected it to, but the other thing I did was put it on full lock and turn slowly in first gear, and then reverse, I couldn't hear anything major which was what I was listening out for, but it does 'feel' like its a struggle... and there is a bit of a groan... is this normal?

Basically, if its passed the tippex test, do I still need to worry?

Many thanks for any advice!

Are you sure the groan is not just the power steering pump working on full lock. When you reverse with steering on full lock it should feel as though the handbrake hasn't been fully released e.g. on a notch or two but not fully. If the car is almost stalling & needs plenty of revs to move then all is not well.

The tippex test is just an indication of a seized VCU. If it is losing function, but still working, then the tippex test won't help.

Based on conversations in this parish, a more reliable way is to check the torque needed to turn the VCU, but it needs to be removed to do this.

I found, just prior to replacement, that when reversing on full lock, there was quite a noticeable slowing - as already noted, as if the handbrake is still on. On my FL, this tension would actually bring the vehicle to a standstill without pressing the accelerator.

I had my VCU replaced (it was long overdue having done 115K miles) and the Landy is so much better. :)

Best of luck

Yeah, I'm quite lucky with mine in this respect in that it's an auto & I reverse every day without touching the throttle then turn into the driveway on full lock. it slows a little but no problems & because I do this every day i'll notice when it gets tighter.

Thanks very much...

The way it feels is as you have described, like the handbrake is half on, it still moves of course, but as I have nothing to compare it to besides it being on 2wd, I didn't know if this is normal...

this does seem normal Suz mine is the same feels like it is dragging a bit on full lock i.e supermarket carparks etc Welcome to 4wd freelandering :D

Just in case anyone was wondering, the prop was fitted, and all is well. I met a lovely guy off here (months back now!) THANK YOU, and mine felt exactly the same as his.

I can happily say its been brilliant for me off road, never been in any bother, where other 4x4 have needed towing, we sail on through! So very happy gaylandering in the mud! The only problems so far has been the exhaust coming off its rubber thing every other time it went off road, but did a diy job, and all sorted!
