:confused: Quite baffled at the moment whilst driving home the other night she developed a sort of ticking more audible at tickover, by the time I got home she was sounding more like a tractor (noise coming from right bank( drivers side)), I have done some research and came to the conclusion it was the exhaust manifold that had split so I took of the heat shield and had a look cant find a split anyware and the noise is sounds like its coming from in the rocker cover well that direction anyway so looking at possible head gasket/valve problem:confused::confused:
I have ordered a complete head gasket sett just in case and looking at replacement heads (just in case).

Just to add:-
No coolant loss/contamination
No Oil loss/contamination
No overheating
No loss of power/acceleration

Any ideas please

I have the exact same issue but on the left bank. I'm preparing for a slipped liner but my LR indie is having a look on Monday - will take the intake / rockers off to see if it's valve gear related first.
Mine only happens when engine has warmed up, which doesn't bode well. Other than the tap / knock there is no power, coolant, oil loss. Someone suggested it could be valley gasket related but it definately sounds like a metal on metal sound.

valley gasket id say mines ticks when warm poss cam shaft wear but more likley valley gasket after lots of research mine also leaks oil at the back end seals are shot. waiting for warmer weather as iv got todo it out side on the drive.
when researching i found a yank post same engine he did valley gasket for ticking sound. fingers crossed at the very least il cure my leak

Interesting vid, thanks.
:clap2::clap2::clap2:Stupid me door lock stopped working a couple of months back, meant to fix it but didn't:mad2::mad2::rolleyes::rolleyes: as was working fine with key fob, now locked out of vehicle with flat battery (job now put off till further notice Great) awaiting PM from 2 members as to how to gain entry lol, good job the girlfriends lending me her SLK:D

The engine in the video is is nothing like the Rover V8 other than it being a V8. Inlet is a totally different set up. There is no plenum gasket to seal the inlet on the Rover engine. It just has a plain valley gasket, no way it can cause a pinging noise. Oil leak yes, noises no way.

its the original v8 that the range rover is based on before land rover ruined it lol i know all the inlet is different etc but similar symptoms, iv put tuesday wednesday aside to tackle my valley gasket n end seals if its dry

The valley cover set up is nothing like the 4.6 Rover unit. Totally different. The Rover unit has a separate valley gasket and a manifold that just fits between the heads. The Dodge has an alloy plenum that covers the entire valley area and a separate cover under the plenum to seal the the bottom. Nothing like the Rover unit.

thats what i said didnt i ? :D

Just for info, the Rover V8 is a derivative of a Buick engine, which they stopped using in around 1963. Maybe someone should tell Buick that Dodge, a rival company, were building it in 1997. It's not the same engine.

+1. Dodge and Buick both designed and built their own engines. The magnum is no relation to the Rover and can't get my head around how the valley seal would cause a ticking noise. I had a bad seal on a carb inlet once which made it run noticeably lean over 5200rpm with occasional misfire above that

Maybe possible on the Dodge engine as the plenum unit covers the entire valley and is sealed at the bottom by a plate and gasket to separate inlet air from the crankcase pressure. The gasket doing that was clearly blown in the video. So maybe an interaction between crankcase pressure and the inlet air in the plenum i don't really know. Certainly can't happen on the Rover engine. Bit like posting the video strip down of a TD6 to help with the overhaul of an M51.

Hi you might want to pop the exhaust manifold off and check it thoroughly, one of ours had a pin hole where the three pipes are welded together at the collector, probably like it from new, but it chuffed away like a good un intil I replaced it with a s/h from Emmots.

1963 im far to young not even a twinkle in me dads eye back then :p

The original 3.5 was a good motor. Been bastardised since then though. In my view even the newer ones were ok to a point, was when they upped the running temp to control emissions they began to fail.

Sory to leave reply for so long but due to work and weather its taken a while to sort out as-well as the fact I had to break in to the vehicle as the lock actuator rod had come off the key barrel (thank-you again to tomcat59alan & Yaro for there advice on entry) and I had a flat battery.
After having to buy new sockets as I didn't have any bi-hex ones to get the exhaust manifold off (snapping one off in the head:mad::mad:) I found the manifold was ok so proceeded to take the head off and found this:-

All back together now but have the problem of the engine is immobilised and wont accept the EKA code, is there anyone in the Clacton area with diag equipment that could help as I have tried all the different methods on the net but none have worked, now very frustrated :mad::mad:.

Cheers Les
