Going for bodywork restoration tomorrow and need some wisdom from the gurus.

Can a put primer directly onto the aluminium bodywork or does it need a special compound applying first?

Cheers

erm....if your going down to bare ali then you need acid etch if not then normal primer will suffice

no no (fetches mallets mallet) doink!!

I mean the acid etch itself in touch-up format.
Can you get acid etch in non-spray can format?

Another guru recommends this stuff:

U-Pol "Barcoat

Any good?

I got a tin of grey etch primer that my local car paint shop guy recommended if going to the metal... give yours a call (plenty about) dry in 30 minutes and ready for a smooth down and a touch up with primer... about £5 a tin and will keep for your next 'project' :) ie oops!
Painted mine by hand a month ago.... perfect.

You first need the etch primer then the undercoat primer, then topcoat.
Try and get hold of some Filiform Corrision Resitant etch primer.
This is the best primer for aliminium. This is what they use in the Aviation industry. One word of advice. Wear a good spraying mask as the are a lot of Chromates in there, very bad for your health
Good Luck
