a clutch will cost between £50-£100 and a heavy duty clutch fork is a good idea to replace while its out (around £10).

think £300 labour is a bit pricey tho :eek:

EDIT: thats for D1 but dont know about D2, D3 or D4. Which model disco you have would possibly help too
 
dont know the area but would be ringing around for better quotes if you dont feel capable of doing it yourself.

I got an AP (borg&beck) clutch with reinforced clutch fork, release bearing etc delivered for less than £100, cant remember exactly how much but theres plenty on ebay
 
Not a hell of a job if you are set up in a workshop with a 4 post lift and tranny jacks,air tools and help on hand.So,yes,I reckon 300 labour a bit steep.If you have done clutches on rear wheel drive cars its a weekend job yourself,with some ramps and a couple of jacks.Have a look at how-to's and do a search,see what the job actually entails then you may feel more confident in assessing the price of the job and even arguing the price down a bit.Politely,or they may fir a frozen tesco pizza instead of a clutch! :D:D:D
 
I sat thinking of changing my clutch on the 200 TDI for a couple of weeks. Finally decided to do it myself.

I can weald a spanner but am not professional and the job took me about 12 hours over two days. I was on my own.

Simplest and best technique I can recomend was to use two or three lengths of threaded bar and place these within the bottom three bolt holes in the bell housing. These supported the gearbox at the front leaving the rear taken care of by the trolley jack. There is a good thread on here.

I brought a Borg & Beck clutch as they seem to have a good following and I am not displeased. A new fork and slippers were also sourced from the same place, Mailorder 4x4.

All in all the job cost me £94 quid plus £17 for a pair of 3 tonne axle stands from Amazon, I borrowed another two from a mate. Put the vehicle on the stands, stripped the console out, dropped the gearbox brackets, split the engine, socket as a guide for new clutch, pout gearbox together using the threaded bar to aid the pushing, left out the top 3 nuts as they are a pain connected the propshafts and drove away.

All I would say is that if I need to do it again I could do it easily in a day and now wonder what the fuss was about.

Yeah,I forgot about those top blts,they are a right bastard,arent they?Similar buggeration to the peugot diesel ford sierra,viz: seven or eight extension bars and a deep socket,trying to push it on blind.You know,it had never occurred to me to leave them off!Seriously!You would think after all the pain and suffering they have caused me that I would have twigged that.:eek::eek:

Dont mean to hi-jack,this is on-subject,but what do the panel think about leaving those awkward bastard top fixing off?
 
stu and i did my 300tdi clutch. put the front wheels up on ramps, hired an engine crane. removed the centre console, engine crane into the car with ropes around the box. top two bolts can be tricky but not impossible. lowered the box to the ground replaced the clutch, lifted the box back up, bit of a swing and she was back in place.
Some people say it easier to remove the engine, but i found it better to drop the box
