Pressure in oil cooler lines?

Engine oil is dripping very slowly onto the steering box and it failed it's test with suspected leaking box. Cleaned up it will pass though, a relief as new boxes don't come cheap.

To fix the leak anyway, I've got the 2 hoses off and can slightly twist the hoses inside the crimped fittings which is why they are leaking. I was thinking if there was little pressure in the oil cooler system I could grind off the crimp bands and fit jubilee type clips instead?

Anyone know the pressure in these hoses?

If there is significant pressure the best option to fix them would be get a local hydraulic hose company to crimp new hose onto the old fittings, freight of new hoses ex uk would be pricy.

disco 300 tdi cooler hoses are well know for leaking ,they arent expensive new ,pressure isnt very high so hose clips could be used

Thanks James I'll give the clips a go and get new hoses later when I do a big order on a uk supplier maybe. On another LR forum a poster said there was 50psi in the hoses eg full big end pressure which I found hard to believe a "normal" type cooler could take hence my question. I would have expected one side of the cooler to be at atmospheric pressure eg One hose just dumping oil into the sump or similar.
Ref the cost...I've only just bought my tdi .Ive tried the local LR dealer twice for parts prices now with poor results, they wanted the equivalent of 50gbp each for 4 new track rod end ball joints which I've ordered instead from paddocks for 9.5gbp ea , but the freight ex uk adds at least 50% to the cost when shipping ex uk, more for bulky or heavy items like hoses.

engine pressure can easily be 60psi when running hose clip will hold over 100 psi easily

Thanks James, do these hoses get full engine pressure then? If so I'll pass that info to a local hose company and get them made here, prob better doing that than going britpart or similar.

The ones fitted are Oem, labelled dn12 Dunlop hoses and have a metal tag dated 1996 so they have lasted well considering they get a bit of heat, flexing and vibration etc

if the hose fails your going to dump yer oil on the floor... why bodge when youve got a local hose supplier that can do it properly.

Ricc it would not be bodge if there is no significant pressure my hilux surf has clips that are not even as good as jubilee clips on it's oil cooler as standard.

Clips $4, new hose crimped on over $200.

But if James confirms there's 60psi in the hose I'll not be using jubilee clips!

Are the O rings in good order?

Bog standard O ring pack will have ones the right size.

Hi discomania, I'll be fitting new o rings, it wasn't leaking at the joints as far as i could tell but it only had 3 rings not the regulation 4.

If no one knows the pressure I'll rig something up to measure it.

Hi KiwiTDI, In NZ, I guess?My 2001 Disco II, TD5 had a jubilee clip on the cooler inlet pipe when we had acquired it @ 96000 km, 4years ago, so I suspect that the pressure is not too high. It's a long story, but cooler lines were replaced a few months ago, about AU$200 for the OEM pipes. Suspect that the hose sizes are not particularly standard and may be difficult to get standard swage fittings to suit. End story? If the leak is at the cooler itself, the jubilee clips would work OK, if not,then consider new lines

Hi Stuart, I got quoted $100 for new hoses to be swaged on but will see tomorrow how the supplier has done the job when I pick them up. I removed the old hose (pita job) to save some dollars and was surprised to find the fittings are smooth thin wall pipe no serrations where the hose fits over etc. The ferrules indent the tube though to prevent the hose from pulling off the fitting.

The oem Dunlop hose has a really high pressure and temp rating according to the supplier, over 100degC and 1000psi and the ferrules are heavy duty as well. I'm guessing this is not so much due to pressure in the oil but strength due to the engine moving about.
