Prep & Treating inside chassis

Hi, I’ve searched the threads a bit first but I still have a burning question.

In the near future I want to clean my chassis, then I’m going to use Waxoyl or Rust Bullet.

Even really ****y and difficult jobs have an easier or a hard way of being done, so based on that; what’s the best way of cleaning the inside of the chassis and presumably removing most of the unwanted debris from inside: There’s a few access points and holes anyone got any favorite methods :confused:

Possibly a dumb question, but I needed to ask:doh:
 
jack it up so its at an angle then pressure wash the inside with hot water or with a steam cleaner making sure you clear the holes every so often as **** will build up in them and stop water escaping

Leave it to dry in a warm garage after that using heatlamps if you have some and then begin the oiling
 
Many thanks for the reply, your methods mention the warmth or heat, other than drying does the warmth go to benefiting the application of Waxoyl in any way ?
 
Waxoyl will go on easier if you warm it up overnight or before application by dumping the tub in boiling water

Heating the chassis will get the water out as will blasting it inside with compressed air, although instead of water you could use something like pure ethanol although more expensive you definitely won't have a problem with getting it dry

Just dont heat it up until the fumes are gone if you use that

Been following your progress, thanks again for sharing, tis a proverbial wonder of info and knowledge for the future, just shows you what can be brought back from the evils of rust. haha well I hope it helps, it's nice to see older vehicles on the road and here's to road tax coming back for the pensioners. At 37 he's more than earnt it.

Ahhh yes the series, haven't updated the thread for a week or so now


Well after it caused a stress and toxic chemical induced collapse this weekend he's not in my best books but I've worked out I've got about a solid 8 hour work load left before it can be shipped off to the LR garage for the engine, rad and oil cooler transplant

I'll be putting my new seats in it when they're brought up by a helpful forum member



Thankfully my to do list of over 100 things has shrunk down to about 12 now with all of them being minor jobs which shouldn't endanger my health too much :rolleyes:

I'm looking to invest in a new military bulkhead for next year as the job done was a simple bodge to get it back to being tough and road legal, although its totally solid now I'd rather have one with vents in it.

New engine is arriving later this week too so i'm looking forward to having a V8 that I know is in tip top shape
 
Bugger ell full of surprises aren’t they lol recovered from that one I hope.

Good engines and pretty reliable on the whole , but get a bad one and its not a very rewarding experience, Highlift cams maybe

I’ve really only started picking at the surface on mine, she’s all fairly good with an MOT and not to much rot, but there’s always a job someware and stuff to be treated to help prevention later. This one was a good starting point for me, I can play and fiddle without taking on to much, the question is always how much to do.
I started wanting a nice run around and weekend fun mobile, but this one seems to be so genuine that adding anything that’s not stock seems wrong :( Every time I look at it I cant help but think it needs restoring as original, which is great, but I still have the hankering to tweak and modify things :D.

Mmmmm at least you had an MOT :p mine hasn't been road worthy for a few years now

Get a second one ;) theres a nice ex fire one thats tax free on ebay at the mo
 
Keep in mind that Waxoyl is flammable (is that how you spell it, it doesnt look right) so may cause problems in the future if you are welding. I reckon used engine oil, less flammable, would do the same job.
 
In all fairness when I first mentioned this work a mate suggested engine oil, he said it would do a good a job as any.
I hadn’t considered the flammability after it was applied! Thanks for the add and heads up, future welding is something that will almost certainly take place. I’m quite looking forward to seeing if this Rust Bullet is all its made out to be, like all things time will tell.
 
Waxoyls fine, I'm using Tetroseal on mine

The old waxoyl didnt set alight after having grinding sparks rain down upon it it was only when welding onto a patch that wasnt fully cleaned that it set alight
