Good Day good peeps!
Is there by any chance such a thing as a scanner capable of plugging into the port on my 2002 Freelander !, or is the port just a novelty item installed to amuse and confound the naive newcomer to the joys of Landrovers? If there is please put me out of my misery and point me in the right direction.
I am as you can see a newbie so don't laugh to much!

Yes you need a Land Rover coded obd scanner. Such things as Hawkeye, icarsoft i930, delphi, WOW. All work well. Depends what functions you need. Simple code reads use the i930 or buy a clone delphi or WOW if you can find one.
Icarsoft gives live data and is very useful but doesn't give fob programming and ccu reprogramming functions. Depends what you want to pay. Icarsoft about 90 quid. Clones are cheaper but you need to be a bit of a pc whizz to get them to run on a laptop!!!

Thanks Andy
Thats spot on, when I got the Landy it has only one key and fob, not ideal. So I would like to have the ability to program another fob etc. I travelled from South Bucks to East Sussex 10 years ago to get another MGF owner who did the job for me with his scanner. The MG was another Rover group vehicle employing an obscure diagnostic system. With the exception of the lcarsoft do the others all fulfil that function?

I think Hawkeye does fobs. The clones won't.
You need an icarsoft i930 for free lander, Hawkeye for freelander or the WOW and Delphi which are multi car systems but read Freelander OK. I haven't got the links for these as I haven't seen them for sale for a while.

There is also pscan. Please see https://pscan.uk/features/freelander1.html

The older Freelander 1s only have a fob, and pscan can do those.
The later ones have a fob (which pscan can still do) but it only does the central locking, and there is also a separate immobiliser ECU which is controlled by a small chip in the key itself.
There is no way to reprogram the immobilisers (EWS3 or SAWDOC) to accept unprogrammed keys using a diagnostic tool. With these the options are:-
By a new key from Landrover that's already preprogrammed to the VIN.
Find someone that can clone the existing key chip.
Remove the immobiliser and reprogram it on the bench, but be warned that they are extremely difficult to access.

pscan can enable or disable one of these keys into the immo, but it can't program one that is not already linked to the vehicle.
There is more information in the above link.

I hope that makes sense.

Couldn't remember the model but had a look! I have a T300 programmer that does Freelander 1 fobs and matches them to the CCU. Ali express sell them.
