Power steering

Now then, I would like to fit power steering to my series, but don't really want to mess around with the chassis by doing all the work required to fit a disco power steering set up, which we have off our old discovery. We're looking at fitting one of these which is a bit pricey but as its a bolt on system and looks well made seems like a good solution.

I'm wondering, as we have the power steering pump off the 2.5 thats fitted to the engine, would we only need to get the ram cylinder, steering rods and ram bracket (thus saving a few hundred pounds) or do we need the whole kit? Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated

And yes, before anyone says to man up and not fit it, I could drive it as is but this is going to be my daily driver and so I want it to be as user friendly as possible. We're fitting power brakes to it so may as well do the steering as well, I 'm not going to sell it ever so may as well

Look at the price, for what it costs its probably not worth it, if you look at the parts you could get a hyd ram off a small forklift or something and mod it

Yeah, I thought I'd ask before buying anything. I do have all the power steering stuff off the discovery and the pump off the 2.5 thats in the vehicle. I just don't want to mess around with the chassis too much, which is whats putting us off sticking the discovery bits to it, thats why we're looking at this sort of bolt on conversion. I could man up, but having needed severe effort to move it round from the garden to the garage power steering would be handy.

I'd still go with the option of keeping it on manual steering, nothing wrong with it and it'll build up your strength

I have been tempted to leave it as is, you can blame my dad for tempting me into the realm of power steering

I've managed to get hold of a series 3 brake servo to get power brakes which are apparantly as rare as hens teeth to get hold of

I'm avoiding that problem by fitting an early fender axle to the front with single circuit disks and a special vehicles axle on the rear with them supersized drums

Hi I just bought 1977 series 3 with early defender 2.5 diesel engine and need to fit p.a.s the vehicle has range rover diffs with 16 inch wheels and wide tyres so you can imagine how heavy it is to steer.

Is there a ready made kit to fit?

You think you have wide tyres ?

shouldnt be that heavy ,my mrs can drive a series ok,theres this kit its good or you can mod rr p38 box or if your skilled fit defender box and move cross member etc,

I have a range rover classic box with a pump and reservoir if that is of any help?

Series 3 steering ain't that bad if it's looked after, I would look at the steering you have to see if you have a problem.
