Steering groans a little when cold but is usually fine after. Havent topped up in ages just today it spilled over. Normal commute home no racing.....

Just checked a few things,

Belt tension is good, newish belt, and doesn't slip when engine runs, pump turns freely.

PSF (recommended ATF) is dark red in colour and doesn't smell burnt but is very hot.

No funny noises when steering lock to lock

ok done some searching and reckon failing pump. Excess heat through worn bearings causing warm fluid and build up on low pressure side causing it to rise in the reservoir.

Any other takers...

Just like the gearbox you check level in power steering when cold. Fluid will get hot and will expand. You could try bleeding system just in case you have any air in it. See RAVE for method.
