Seems to have a PS fluid leak, dripping down the front of the (new looking) box onto the axle etc, I just
cant see exactly where from? Is there a common problem I should know about but don't?

Nige Hi,

you don't say which model of Landy you have so I presume it is a Defender,
Disco or RaRo.
If you have a PAS system leak this most probably must come from the PAS box.

It is known for the stop leak additives to have cured this problem
occasionaly.
Same results were also achieved by adding some brake fluid to your PAS fluid
reservoir. Brake fluid reportedly has the capability of increasing the
volume of rubber seals therefore renewing their sealing capacity.

Take care

Hi, cheers, It's a RRC, I'll have a look at the pipes etc first, just wondered if anyone knew of inherent
problems?

Watch it's not simply running down from the reservoir onto the box !!

It's a common problem - the seal in the bottom of the box "cuts" a
groove in the output ("sector") shaft. Replacing the seal may work
for a bit (make sure it's a blue one), but the only real solution
is to get a recon box - making sure its got more re than con, i.e.
it has a new output shaft and full seal kit fitted. A good supplier
will offer a 12 month warranty.

My Defender has gone through four or five steering boxes because of
various wear related problems in 20 years 125000 miles. They are a
poor quality product but thankfully a recon box from those nice people
in Exchange & Mart, 'National Power Steering', does not cost a King's
ransom.

Hi matey, it's coming from above the box & running down over it. I'll have a good look tomorrow.

Leaky pipe, union or reservoir or, worse case, a split housing.

Can't remember even roughly. The last one was some four or five years
ago and I do go through and see a huge number of parts on almost a
daily basis, most all of which are not LR related you'll be glad to
know.

Just had another look, none of the pipe unions are loose or leaking, it's covered in fluid & it seems to
be leaking from the shaft where the column goes in, but there's more underneath too. Jet wash time I
think to clear it off & see where it is coming from!

Nige Hi,

I seem to remember an advertisement in LROI from someone selling
reconditioned PAS boxes for 110 pounds.

Very lucky. I have had various LR products with this design of box
over the years, all on newer machines than 'old faithfull' and have
always had to change 'boxes regularly. My experience is that the more
offroad or rough terrain use the vehicle has, the shorter the box
life. Longest I have managed is 80,000 mainly road miles in an '88
Range Rover.
I don't tend to worry about the leak that only needs topping up every
fortnight. Boxes also fail with symptoms such as heavy steering and
excess wandering [yes I know how to adjust it].

I've never had a box fail on a jap vehicle yet but my Trooper is only
just coming up to 100,000 and the LC 80,000. Lucky? Maybe. Certainly
lucky for my pocket.

Huw,

88 RRC on 147,000 miles but with original steering box. Most everything
else is falling to bits tho'!

What can you tell me about your Trooper? Mate has an L reg 3.1TD LWB
Citation that he has asked me to sell but I'm thinking of having to
replace the RR. The Trooper has done 117,000 miles - he's done the
last 62K since 1998, mostly on motorways.

Very nice and comfortable. Slightly high fuel consumption. Expensive
parts. Very poor electrics which are difficult to repair and
expensive. Weak points in this area are all switches, especially
window and light rheostat switches. Lots of cappillary tubes around
the engine which split at the nipples..... best disconnected and
plugged.

Very good quality body and mechanical parts. Poor chassis
rustproofing.
Excellent towing vehicle.
Moderate offroading ability, though much better than most people need.
In common with similar coil springed rear ends, in heavy use they tend
to lose those stupid rubber bump stops which lie like hedgehogs around
the countryside.

Thanks Huw,

Slightly high fuel consumption - when compaired with a 3.5 Efi RRC???
Dodgy electrics - ditto!
What do the tubes do?
Hedgehog loss - sounds worryingly like my RRC ;-)

One last question, please (assuming that your's is a Citation diesel -
if that makes any difference): how high is it? My local tip has a
height restriction that claims to be 6'2" high (or low) which the RRC
goes under without a hesitation and I have seen one LWB Citation in the
place, but . . . .

I can see over my RRC but I am 6'2'' tall and yet the manual for it
claims that it is 6'2''! I can just about stand under the height
restrictor.

Regards Richard

I just sold my Trooper, if you want a very strong reliable machine they are superbly built, but just
don't have the X factor. I used mine 3.1tdi for 6 months as my main car & it was well sound with only
minor stuff going tits up!

Great 3.1 tdi engine too, nice box in auto mode too.
