Power Steering - Can I use it when pump disconnected

Power Steering - The pipe from the pump on my defender 19j was leaking so I tried renewing it. On taking the old one off and comparing with the new one supplied by Landrover they are different. Apart from the length the replacemnt has a male connector to the pump wheras the existing is a female connection on the pipe.
As I have taken the belt off the pump can I use the landy as a temporary measure without power steering or will it a) cause damage or b) not be driveable.
 
it isfine to drive without the pump driving. will be quite heavy in comparison, this is a last option though as prolonged use will damage the box!
 
Hi people, sorry to resurrect this old thread but I have exactly the same question and just wonder if there are others with a view on this?

My high pressure feed pipe sprung a leak. I got a replacement pipe (authentic LR) with the same banjo fitting, but I cannot get it on coz the straight pipe shape doesn't suit the approach to the pump. Maybe the pump is non-standard?

Anyway, the car is coming off the road this weekend so not worth spending time and money fixing it properly. I only have to move the car a short distance. Is it ok to drive with the PAS disconnected?

I'm just concerned that the rest of the steering shaft stuff, or the steering box (3 bolt heavyweight), or the collapsible column, isn't meant to take that strain and might break.

Reckon I'll get away with it?

yes it designed to be steered without assistance though will be heavy
 
Thanks JM. I'll leave it disconnected then and stop worrying about something snapping while I'm in the middle of the road. :baby:

Yeah RH, sounds like the OP got a pipe like mine meant for 200Tdi. I do have a 200Tdi and I still couldn't get the damn thing on!
