possibly stiffed by previous owner, locking wheel nuts!?!

i have just tryed to change the spare for one on the rear axel. while taking the spare off the back i realised it has a locking wheel nut on it, so i looked in the jack box and nothing, checked both glove boxes, nothing.
so my question is, is there a special secret hidy hole somehwere that the wheel nut key is? or is it a trip to halfords to purchase some locking wheel nut breakers??
also is there anything i can do to the seller to recover the costs?

how old freelander is it, the early ones are under the bonnet in the jack pouch and the later ones are in the box in the boot under the boot liner. if its not there try bashing a bigger socket over it, it may save you having to buy a tool to remove them. use an old socket though as i have splt a few doing it this way.
 
Hate to say this but ------- take it to a dealer , with supporting paperwork.
There are about a couple of dozen different locking wheel nut keys, a decent dealer will have them all. For the price of an hours labour he can take them all off, and then will try to sell you a new set. Don't know if the key is available seperately.

Do it now before you get a puncture. Smashing them off nearly always results in damaged alloys :(
 
theres no way its going to a dealer, i ****ing hate there work ethics.
i would much rather try the socket before going and getting the tool.

I've seen various keys on ebay but you'd need to know the code of course... If you haven't already contacted the seller, might be worth doing in case they put it somewhere else... did you check centre console stash box?
 
Whilst i understsand your reluctance to go to a main dealer, I you take you logbook and proof of your ID, they can find the correct code for the locking nut key, I think that the cost is around £10. for a replacement
 
snap on do a special socket for this, has saved me numerous times on my own and friends cars, just for future thinking.

on the other hand i have used a socket before as said, also a punch or an old pair of snip nosed pliers depending on the type of nut.

there is ALWAYS a way of getting em off. If all else fails call a scouser :D

Irwin do a set of 'nut extractors' made for removing nuts which have been rounded which work on the same principle as a stud extractor. Available from Machine Mart and Screwfix.
 
don't be a ****ing scrooge, just get a dealer replacement and save all the hassle......
