Noticed my coolant tank was empty yesterday, so topped it up and it used about 1 litre to go 50 miles, used it to go to work and back today and it used another 500ml for 30 miles.

I have the usual mushroom coloured mush on the underside of the oil cap so the coolant is definitely getting into the oil.

No other HGF signs, not overheating, no loss of power or white smoke from the exhaust.

Had a new oil cooler last year can they fail within a year?

Any thoughts before I start pulling the engine apart?

Started to strip the engine down and there seems to a lot of water in the air intake.

Air filter is bone dry but pipes to and from the intercooler have water running out of them. EGR is blanked.

Anyone know how the water could get into the air intake? could it be coolant?

Is the turbo water cooled?

I presume HGF, it would loose a expansion tank of coolant in a few miles.
Milky substance on oil filler cap.

Its still on the drive not sure what to do with it yet, haven't investigated any further

Are you sure it's not coolant leaking through the oil cooler and into the engine? A combustion leak tester should tell you if it's HGF.

Could be oil cooler, looking for suggestions like that. It doesn't show any of the other features of HGF. will look at oil cooler tomorrow.

Is there a way to test the oil cooler?

done a sort of test on the oil cooler today. Pulled it off and blocked inlet then attached hose to the outlet and gave it mains pressure, also poured a couple of kettles of water over it to heat it up, left it for an hour and couldn't see any water coming out the oil inlet and outlet.

Noticed the oil is about an inch above max on the dip stick, so will get that dropped and see how much coolant comes out the sump first
