right here goes my dse takes ages to start, i have to do the glow plug light 3 or 4 times, i have done a power test on them and they average between 11.00 and 11.45, i have already put a new glow plug relay in but still same, the glow plug light stays on for about 5 seconds, a few weeks ago i put some new glow plugs in but were cheap ones could it be that,
cheers

I would change the leak off pipes first, look on ebay its £3.25 a meter and you need 3.2mm OD ones, cured my morning starting problems.

how do i know if it has gone, also where is it and is it easy to replace :)

Being a P38 I suspect it's more complicated than a timer relay, maybe the BECM or engine ECU controls the time the glowplugs are on:eek: If so, it could be an engine temp sensor. I would have to look at RAVE to be sure how it works.

From cold after standing ovenight (in temperatures of 18 to 20C) the glowplug light stays on for 20 to 30 seconds on mine.
Compared to my Transit it seems like a lifetime:rolleyes::rolleyes:

like datatek said engine temp sensor is another possible giving false reading to engine ecu, its behind injector pipes in with glowplugs also might be worth checking glowplugs still ok friend of mine got a diesel something or other [I am old, memory not good] when glows go down on it light doesnt stop on long at all. sorry cant be any more help my brain hurts now.

you still got a wallet skippy22! I got a wheelbarrow now, wallet big enough. think ive spent more on p38 in 8 months than i did on 89 classic i ran for 7 years before it AND the 75 classic ran for 13 years before that. 20 years of range rover ownership no wonder my brain hurts.

i would check the relay again as we had a similar story, the glow plug light went out quick enough2-3 seconds but the motor would churn for a short while then fired up, this was both when she was running hot or cold.
then one day she gave up the gost and had to get her towed to dealer.he checked everything out and only had to replace the relay, scince then she starts on the turn and performs like she should,
our p38 is a 2001 and has 136 000 miles on the clock.
