While i know the whole idea of a forum is to get help and advise when we have problems, the Freelander forum makes dire and depressing reading.
I have only had mine a short time, and covered 1500 trouble free miles, but i refuse to believe they are the pile of crap people are making them out to be.
While thet are not an "off roader" they have there place in the market, and for what i want one for,(pulling caravan, commuting) it appears to be the ideal car, for me.
So can we please have some positive comments from people who are enjoying trouble free use of their Freelander.;)
Back me up people, we are getting slaughtered by those disco divas upstairs, and having owned two popemobiles, i know what they are REALLY like:D :D

Couldn't agree more!! I use another forum for my other car (a sort of Ford Cortina) and there is banter there between the different marks but there is nothing like the negativity that there appears to be here towards Freelanders. I know forums are good to have the craiq and a laugh but it appears that there is very little here in the way of anything positive with regards to Freelanders. I have to admit that I nearly gave up using this place when the guy came on looking for advice on where his fuel filter should be!!

I wonder, did people take the mickey out of Discoverys when they were first launched? Were they considered not to be a 'proper' Land Rover??

I have yet to learn if my Freelander is truly an off-roader but my reasons for buying are pretty similar to Freds, plus me Mom lives in an area of Wales that gets 'snowed in' from time to time so its niced to know that I have something has a chance of getting through should the need arise.

I'm mid- 30's and (other than being a bit on the thirsty side) so far the car is spot on for what i need, a Disco would have been too expensive for me and a bit overkill for my needs - I go onto construction sites and tow a folding caravan (nothing too heavy there) and go up the odd track with my mountain bike - time will tell if its off-road performance is sufficient or not (could be tricky as I dont have much to compare it to). In the mean time, it looks good, drives good and keeps me happy - maybe I am easily pleased!!

Absolutely. Although it was little more than a new engine in a Range Rover parts bin special. What really got a reaction was the mainstreaming of the brand - Landy people have a great sense of ownership of it and the unwashed Discovery hoardes were seen as a threat to that.

It is, but they cost more to fix if you dint the body, so give it a few years and you'll see loads at pay and play

Ours was fine for green laning, and very enjoyable. Reliability was poor though.

We have two and we are delighted with them.

First is a 2002 TD4 with 36k trouble free miles. Great road car and plucky off road. Stable tow car for most applications, but obviously not able to tow larger combinations.

Second Freelander (1998 CT) shows what the potential of the vehicle is. I maintain I can get to 9/10 of places a 110 can, at 40mpg, arriving warm in winter and cool in summer.

... plus no Defender elbow!

Every year we see more modified Freelander vehicles and will continue to as prices drop.

I previously owned a Series III but the Freelander is a true all rounder and I doubt I would go back - unless I wanted to enter challenge-type competition, when a 90 or heavily modified Disco is a clear winner.

Horses for courses!

Cheers

This is a good thread, and I shall be watching with interest. I had posted a question on this forum about getting a Freelander and received some good replies.

However I'll be honest and say that reading the rest of the forum had just about put me off. Was starting to really worry about ownership costs and reliability. A big issue sice I've had so much bother with my current car.

Keep the feedback coming. :)

I think that you probably have more chance of getting a good one second hand. The usual problems can be looked for, a/c, power loss of the Td4 etc. etc. and a good car can be had.

It's a bit like asking a technie who works for a solus franchise - when working with VW they would slag the product off for unreliability, because all they saw were broken VW's in their job!! When you had a techie who had jumped ship from another brand, e.g. Renault/Ford their perspective enlightened the entrenched VW techie's view.

If that makes any sense?

just a quick word from a 90 owner , i hope you realise your giving the idiots on this forum ammo by talking about this , the problem with this forum is there is to many childish people , all led by everybodys best friend " yello disco " WHAT A PRAT , ( lets see what his response to that is ) . the annoying thing is it's quite well set out , but , you cant get in edge ways , you ask a question and by the time the children have finished messing around your question has been forgotten .
the only reason i've logged in this time is to put my 2p's worth in , there are other forum , and you get your questions answered . and still have a laugh .
my other point is you freelander owners , check out who's taking the **** , it's the same one's all the time , just like i said earlier , ignore them if you are happy with your freelander then defend them , they wear the landrover badge so they must be landrover , i know nothing about them and they're not my thing . somebody must like em , after all you lot bought them . ( defend , defend , defend .)
( am i gonna get some stick for this or what )

Good post Rick, open discussion and sensible balanced comment, i;ve been defending my F/lander "up there" for a couple of weeks now, and as you said, horses for courses, cheers M8.

Owning a Td4 Steptronic 5 drs since january 9th 2001 I still love and like it as much as on day 1. Also my wife loves it, the way it drives and the comfort we have in it. My previous car (Mercedes 190E 13 years and >200.000 kms) did not give the same level of satisfaction as this Hippo does. Driving the Mercedes towards the sea (some 120 kms) resulted in my wife suffering of backache, with the Hippo we can do 500 km trips and she doesn't feel any pain at all. Also in combination with the Steptronic the Td4 is a real dream to drive. For me the A/C and the heating (even with the extra FBH) could be more performant as these are the two items of criticism but besides that the car is fantastic. Today it reached a kind of milestone in it's life (see attached picture, being on the continent it shows kilometers, not miles of course) and I hope to be able to keep it for several (5 to 10) more years.

At the end of the day it's a simple case of "One mans meat is another mans poison". You lads like yer Freelanders and I like my old Series motor. I have no experience of the Freelander as one is of no use to me personally because at that kind of money its too expensive too chuck down quarrys and big holes. It's that simple.

Regards WP.

As positive comment it can count.:D :D :D (Even if it comes from an unexperienced person not owning (nor having driven one?) a Freelander).

Than you don't know what you are missing.;) I drove a softback Def90 lately and I was glad to be able to get into the Hippo again afterwards. That confirms what you said before about a man's meat and poison.:D
(Also went along with my neigbour, the owner of that Def90 on an offroad day, was impressed by what it was able to do but also by an Hippo which took muddy sloops where 2 Discos had to pass.:D But the most impressed I was by a small Suzuki Samurai, unbelievable what the guy was able to do with it).

isnt it funny how people forget about the times you help them

if freelanders are so good then why are most of the posts about the same problems, hdc, heaad gasket, 1.8 being underpowered, etc etc

i don'thave an argument with any freelander owners and i try to help them if i can, even though i take the **** at times ;)
