Can anyone give me a suggestion on what might have blown, just driving along nice and comfortably then a small pop from rear, immediate loss of power down to 10 mph and tons of black oily smoke if the accelerator goes more than an inch down, feels as though no power and barely crawling along, i managed to crawl home (only about 1/2 mile from home when it happened....

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

check your turbo impellor you may find this has either snaped or a turbo bearing has failed
the black oil smoke could be oil from the turbo bearing escaping direct out of the exhaust path
if the bearing has failed do not run engine no more until fixed due to possible engine runaway if the oil gets into the cool side of the turbo

from experience when my boost hose blew off I never had any black smoke
also if a boost hose has blown off you can actually hear the turbo singing

unsure if this is any help

edit
I have just ran a test with mine I disconnected a boost pipe ..then went for a small drive
I have zero power and not the slightest smoke out of the exhaust (MAP sensor can not allow to fuel up injectors ) regardless of peddle position

I also have the series 2 2002 td5

Well after 30 minutes of scratching around under the bonnet, the answer....... a blown internal lining on the Boost Hose that goes from the turbo into the intercooler....£36 from the dealers (i collect on tuesday) and we should be back up and running, did a number of tests with the hose in front of the suspect pipe and the revs returned immediately and no smoke, i now have the offending pipe sat in my workshop for comparison to the new part on tuesday.

Many thanks for all the help guys

Fitted the new boost hose tonight..........and rather annoyingly the screwdriver slipped on the jubilee clip and shattered the small plastic pipe that runs from the water bottle to the top of the radiator...... at least its only a five minute replacement when i get the new part but now i have longer to wait before i get the car back on the road,

i managed to fire up the beast and the revs have returned and the smoke has begun to clear to virtually nil, so it seems fine

fitted the new small pipe that runs from the coolant bottle to radiator, but rather annoyingly i now have a small leak of oil that drops onto the cross steering bar from somewhere under the engine?...wasnt there before the boost hose went....

Sadly yes, the first pool, (about the size of a pringles lid) was very watery which i hoped was just water residue from the split coolant pipe which had gathered on the lower areas of the engine bay (whilst i waited for the replacement), i dried it all off and took it for a drive and as soon as i parked it up i had small drops onto the drive, a check of the cross bar showed black oil only (no water)...

Oil level still sits at the full mark, albeit i have only driven it round the block for 5 minutes
