Hello,
This is my first post. I’ve joined because I’m at the end of my tether with my Freelander 2 TD4 (07), and I was hoping that people with superior knowledge of these beasts might be able to shine some light on the most recent problem. I love this car, but it seems to be failing on so many things lately.
It has done 154k miles. It had a new clutch a few months ago, and new front tyres, swiftly followed by new rear wheel bearings and rear tyres. The front wheel bearings also need replacing now too.
The radio, reversing sensors, automatic wind-up of front windows and rear wiper all work intermittently, and the car alarm goes off incessantly when locked. The battery goes flat when not started for a couple of days (I’ve had a new battery but it still goes flat).
Yesterday, whilst accelerating in 2nd gear, there was a loud pop from the front of the car, a burning/smoke smell (though no smoke to be seen) and it lost power, juddering along at about 10 mph. I stopped the car, waited for a while, then started it again which it did without a problem. But it wouldn’t go above a hesitant crawl. It was towed away and is awaiting a mechanic to come and look at it.
I have no mechanical knowledge, but was hoping someone might recognise these symptoms and be able to offer a suggestion as to their cause? It sounded pretty awful so I’m half expecting someone to say they think it could be something major.
Thank you in anticipation!

I don't know an awful lots about these, but I'd start by examining all the induction hoses on the engine - from the turbo to the intercooler and then on to the engine inlet manifold.

Don't know how accessible the intercooler is, but check that hasn't burst to.

The boost hoses are known to fail, especially after 13 years.
The intercooler has also been known to burst too, both of these things would effect the performance.

It does sound like turbo boost pipe as for the tires and clutch they are consumables also with a high mileage are the wheel bearings so I would not deem that surprising.

Thank you for your advice, I will check.
