Hi Guys

I am having excatly the same problem, I did change the alty last year, could it still be faulty?...it is reading 14.7v when running, but car still wont start on a cold morning without a jump start, the engine turns very slowly and if it doesnt fire up after the first few turns the battery seems to die and it needs a jump start....battery readings are around 12.7v in the morning but wont spin the engine fast enough to fire up, I took out the starter motor and cleaned allthe connections yesterday and today the car neeeded a jump start again....apart from gettting rid of the car is there anything else i could try/check??

mine used to do this, then i took off and cleaned the earth cables (battery to body to chassis AND chassis to starter motor) and put a new cable battery to engine, starts first flick of the key now. poor earths will kill a battery

ffs KM - i told ya - Halfrauds can test both at the same time - and its free - so yu didnt ask em then:doh:?

the righthe guy who served me at halfords told me they didnt have t equipment to check the alternator

I have already cleaned up all the earth connections and dont know what to try next!!!

Hi, I have a 300tdi es 1996 with 150k, When left over night its very slow to start or sometimes wont start unless it jumped of another car in which case it starts on the key, The battery light glows a little but not much, If driven to work and left for 9hrs it starts ok, but over night it not to good, and if the weather is very cold it wont start unless jumped of another car, any ideas Cheers

Stussy, have you sorted this issue yet?

Same problem here. Getting on my nerves now

I don't know where to start looking for earth cable's though to check them

I have spoken to a local firm who repair alti`s they said that the diode fails and drains the batt when stood, I was going to take it off so that they can check the alti and replace the diode if its faulty, But!!! i cant get the bloody thing off, the bottom bolts is seized solid, :frusty:

Thanks for the help, the battery is about 2 years old, its a 540 cca , is that the right size?? I have tried using a jump lead from the neg terminal on the battery and put it to the engine and the batt light sill glows dim when running. When i wont start off its own power if its connected to another landrover by jump leads if fires right away even if its been stood all night.

540cca is very modest for starting a disco in winter, imo you need at least 700cca

Stussy, any Auto Electrician worth his salt will be able to test the alternator on the vehicle. the diode pack is possibly the issue and is a common failure but it could also be other things.

Hmm another possible with mine. care to elaborate? :)

tell me what alternator it is and it is easy - this is the sorta thing.

it should look summat like this...
