So recently my 2001 disco td5 does not like starting from cold. You have to turn her over for 5+ seconds and then she runs rough for the first 15 seconds, like a misfire, and sends out white smoke that smells very dieselly, not like that burning oil smell, it is a horrible smell, that which you would only get from a diesel engine. After it clears she runs ok and starts ok from hot, but.... The other day i was following other td5s on a hilly road and could not keep up with them, i always thought she was very slow but clearly it is that she's underpowered. Please help me i'm completely stuck....
I have recently replaced the turbo (with new), all glow plugs, also had a new wiring loom and ecu was cleaned a few months back.
Any light on the subject would be great! Thanks

One thought. Have you checked the battery earth. TD5s need really good earths. Try a jump lead from the engine block to the battery negative terminal when next cold starting and see if that cures the problem.

My guess would be air/fuel problem.

These vehicles are susceptible to air leaks at certain places which makes starting more difficult. Also the pressure of the fuel as it reaches the engine is quite critical and can cause poor starting and poor running as insufficient fuel is reaching the engine.

So, the first thing I would do is to replace the fuel filter with a genuine LR one - expensive but useful to set a baseline.

Straight after replacing the filter, turn on the ignition to pos II and list to the pump at the rear rhs wheel, it is easy to hear. After about 2 mins the pump noise should run down or stop. Now imediately take the car for a 10 minute drive and analyse how she drives - better, the same or worse?

Then report back.

Good luck

Dave
