I recently had a broken bleed cap on the fuel filter of my TD5 noticed when the vehicle ran poorly and after investigating saw diesel dropping. I changed the filter and ran the ECU bleed procedure (now about 20 times!!). Engine is still running poorly, like on 4 cylinders, though occassionally will idle correctly before loosing it again. I would welcome any ideas, thanks in advance.

Hello mate, is Diesel still dripping...?
Because it might be worth while looking down the drivers side of the engine towards the back of the cylinder head to make sure the fuel pressure regulator isnt leaking...

Only a thought, as I had to replace one on my Uncles TD5 a while ago...

Has the pump quietened down? Is there a big hiss if you remove the fuel filler cap? Is there any signs of oil in the injector wiring harness plugs?

No change in pump noise and no hiss when removing the filler tank. I'll take a look at the injector harness this morning. No dripping now but I'll also take a look at the fuel pressure regulator. Fingers crossed - thanks for the advice so far.

hey AB209
I have the same problem at the mo on my td5 11.
I replaced the fuel pressure regulator about 6 months ago coz it was leaking.
All runniing smoooooth untill last week when the engine went all lumpy and running on 3 or 4 cylinders. At the mo I can't even start it.
Could it be injectors or something simple ?
All help very welcome.

Check the injector wiring loom for signs of oil contamination. Can you still hear the in tank fuel pump working? Check the earth bolt under the drivers seat is secure. Also check all fuses/relays under the drivers seat. They like to rattle loose and this prevents your vehicle starting.

Ratty
I managed to get it started and limp it home.. I have taken the rocker cover off and am cleaning the wiring loom etc. It does not seem to have run down to the ECU. Whats the issue if you can not here the pump working ?
I will check all fuses etc.

possible fuel pump relay u/s but more likely is the pump has gone weak.

Re my oroginal post concerning poor running TD5 - I checked all as advised including oil in harness, also removed the rocker cover and checked each injector connection - cleaned connector under drivers seat that was pretty gimy re-assmbled all and job done! all has been running smooth since (now about 80 miles). I think cleaning out both ends of the wiring loom did the trick. May be worth a shot

Ok guys.
I have cleaned the ecu and wiring loom. Put it together and no change.
I am now checking the pump etc.
If I remove fuse no10 for the pump should it make a difference. I have removed it and swaped it, it makes no difference and I can not here the pump. Should the pump be obvious to hear? Is the pump u/s and how much are they?

The pump should be relatively easy to hear. Not very loud but still audible. It does sound like it's the pump at fault. They are about £230.

The pump is inside the tank but you should be able to hear it when you key the ign before starting. You can crudely check if it is pumping by removing the fuel filter drain plug. PUT A BUCKET UNDER THE FILTER. Then turn the ignition on. If you get fuel pumping out then the low pressure side is working. It may be the high pressure part of the pump that is playing up. You can check that by removing one of the fuel lines from the fuel cooler and once again CATCH THE FUEL IN SOMETHING when you key the ign. If its knackered unfortunately you have to buy the whole unit as its not servicable. I've seen complete tank and pump on eBay for less than £100 before now if you dont mind taking a chance on a used one. Otherwise its mega bucks for a new un.
