Posted about this a while ago - changed glow plugs and glow plug relay and done some tests (well ones within my limited ability) and all seems well

first start of the day takes about 10 secs followed by lots of smoke

starts on the button for the rest of the day !!!!

Just wondering if it could be a battery issue ?? - battery looks quite old

Might just change it for the sake of good order!!!

Any battery recommendations for the old doozle ???

ive got the same problem as you with my XDI.

I have read that with the L series even tho the battery has enough power to turn the engine if its not up to 12 volts they dont like starting very well for some reason, could be to do with the glow plugs etc..

Im going to change myne, thinking of getting a nice beefy commercial batt !
:D

I've tackled it in reverse order....stuck the beefy battery on (Bosch Silver from Halfords). Still not right.

Glow plugs tomorrow.

Will report back.

pump timing prob about a degree out. advance it about that amount, and all will be well.

the deviation solenoid which corrects the timing dynamically is already pressurized by that point, overnight the fuel slowly leaks back. so first thing in the morning, you have to crank to pressurize the timing solenoid which in turn corrects the timing of the pump before it fires. trust me, it only needs to be 0.5-1.0 degrees out.

thanks, i have learnt something today :)
