I'm badly wanting another RR Classic and I want to make really sure I can't afford a V8 before I go for a Diesel like I normally do, only I know nothing about using LPG. The figures look dandy on paper (assuming you buy a car already converted) but what are the realities of using it day to day? ..and is there a version of the V8 that responds to LPG best?

The Rover V8 is a good engine for LPG.
My LPG system hasn't missed a beat in over 70k miles. At 69p / ltr & an average of around 15-17 mpg its a no brainer.
A professionally installed multi point system is a must.
PS, Folks who knock LPG have either no knowledge of it or have bodged a cheap install previously & suffered.

I've had 2 RRC's on lpg and loved both of them, not only for the v8 burble that you love but because of running costs being quite reasonable.

If you need boot space make sure you get one with either a toroidal tank (spare wheel type), under slung tanks or both preferably so you have a decent range.

you will get slightly less mpg on gas but not a noticeable difference and on a good run you can expect 18mpg as opposed to 14/15 average but with the price of gas this isn't too hard a pill to swallow when you consider your car weighs 2 tonnes and has the aerodynamics of 2 house bricks.

Just do it you won't regret it. The v8 will make you smile every time you start it :D

My opinion on multipoint lpg is it is crap, the rover v8 is notorious for cracked blocks as mixture runs hotter than rich carb engine.
Gm knew about this and flogged rover the fireball v8 which ran 200 hp back in prehistoric times.

The rv8 is pre historic pile of ****, if you wish to run one then either afford it on petrol or don't bother.

I binned the rv8 in my 90 as it wasn't worth bothering with and put a quad cam v8 in

Oh when you do get one it doesn't cost much to get an lpg specialist to look over the system to make sure it's all correct and is definitely worth the piece of mind.

LPG stations are also becoming more common too.
I can get over 330 miles from my Torroidal 95ltr tank if i take it steady so rarely find i'm having to run on unleaded looking for LPG.

Do you mean they run hotter on LPG? I had a couple of V8 Rover SD1's back in the day and they seemed fine (on petrol) - this is the kind of thing I need to know chap, thanks.

Neither of mine ever got past half way on the temp gauge but they were both single point.

I'm struggling with the maths here (partly because I don't know the current Diesel price, I just stick 20 quid in my F1 each time lol) but what you're getting out of your P38 is starting to sound impressive!

RV8's can suffer cracked blocks / slipped liners regardless of running LPG or not. A good cooling system is a must however.

Can torroidal tanks be filled to more than 80%

Feck me I've a lot to learn about LPG

What happens about a gauge then, do you have a separate one or does a separate sender share the car's gauge?

..and does the car smell gassy like when Grandad boils the kettle?

Lpg is crap

What he says ^^^

Have now had three LPG converted motors, one factory, one unknown but certified and one professional. Not all rover though.

Factory tried to rev itself to death and main dealer couldn't fix it.
Unknown helped to kill a rv8 and rpi short block.
Professional was repaired many times under warranty but I didn't keep it long enough to see if it caused damage.

Tbh when they work they are reasonably cheap to run but I would choose derv over LPG

Lets assume the average price for diesel is £1.35 ltr (£6.14 gallon)
Say your getting 30 mpg so it's costing £0.20 per mile. You will need to check your current mpg though.

By comparison
I pay £0.69 ltr (£3.14 gallon)
I average around 16 mpg on LPG (this is measured from usage not computer as LPG will give you around 15% less MPG than unleaded) so it's costing around £0.20 per mile.
On a good run i can get 18 mpg (22 mpg on unleaded)

Generally you will end up paying a little more running LPG than diesel due to the extra servicing etc. But IMO well worth it.
