Please Help - No Crank No Start

Hi guys,

Im having an issue with getting her to start, and these is a Symbol on the instrument cluster that was not there before. I think it might have something to do with the immobiliser. ( See attached Picture)

What is the issue with the starting, bit more info please.

discovery 1 or 2 ?, engine?, does it turn over? is it laboured? ,does the starter click? did you use the fob to lock / unlock it? is this a new problem?

The crossed out B usually indicates a problem either with or between the BCU and the IDM, it's most often a failure in communication between the two, it could be either. It could quite easily be involved with your problem and your suspecting the immobiliser circuits.

Unfortunately it's generally regarded as pretty bad news.

The BCU, or Body Control Unit is behind the glove box on the passenger's side and the IDM is on the back, but inside the passenger's compartment fuse board.

As to why the failure has occurred, I haven't a clue but the usual things to check are water contamination in the IDM or in the BCU.

As above, if you insert "crossed B" in the search engine you'll find lots of info, it's not easy to rule out and it can be expensive but the best way is to replace the IDM(interior fusebox) first cos it's plug and play(the only important thing is to disconnect the battery first then after replacement and battery reconnection put ignition on II and leave it so 5 minutes for digital data comms reestablishment wit BCU) ...then if the symptom persists the BCU must be replaced but this one needs complex programming with dedicated tester made by someone who knows what he's doing

at least you have this info for free cos i've learned this the hard way 9 years ago when it happened to me and paid around 300 quid only for trailers from one ''specialist'' to another untill i took the problem in my own hands and found the PCB cracked within the BCU after two weeks of troubleshooting based only on diagrams and poor info found on the web at that time

Thanx for the great advice guys,

I will go and have a look at those two in the morning to see if anything is loose as it happened just after I was on a very bumpy road. The Fob is working at the minute but not working well at all... very seldom opens the doors.
I have Ordered a hawkeye scanner to try establish the problem, it will be here by Friday. Im sure it will let me know if that BCU is stuffed, im hoping not as in that case it sounds like it could just be a fuse box.

I have a feeling that i might have got a dud here, as non of the Amigos are working and no warning lights and now the immobiliser....

I have uploaded two pics of the fuse box inside, anyone have any idea whats been done here? one of the wire runs up to the ignition chamber.

There's some ugly bodge on the lh indicator relay's circuit and rear wiper... the problem is that if they modified the wiring a new fusebox will not work as it should... schmucks

Sigh ! well im actually dreading plugging that Hawkeye in... im really hoping it was just something thats come loose from driving off road

Hawkeye or any other tester is useless in this particular issue

O really..... will it not let me know if the BCU is gone or if its the fuse box?

No way to bypass these, it's digital data link between them, the only certain way is like i told you in my first reply, ruleing them out one by one, fusebox first though seing that wiring bodge let's hope it's the BCU cos putiing in an unmodified fusebox it might not work on that bodged circuit, being immobilised the BCU is the first suspect anyway

So the way forward from here is to first disconnect the Battery and then remove glove box to get to the BCU to do a general inspection to ensure its not just a loose wire or something. Providing that checks out OK then replace the inside fuse box. The rear wiper is not there so does not work anyway and when it stopped working the indicator relay was clicking away but not hazards on so dont think that works either.

If after I have done that it purists replace the BCU, Is it possible to replace it and take it on a trailer to Land Rover to program the thing?

You can programm it yourself if you have hawkeye, the only thing you can't do with hawkeye is to synk used fobs but you can buy BCU with sync'd fob or disable the immobiliser and drive it, i say again it's possible to have problems with a good fusebox as it might not match with that wiring mod.... for 100% verified used parts and direct advice with synking i recommend you:

I just looked at the BCU, everything has a good connection and its all dry so looks good.

No website only a ebay store, better call him cos he'll help you with advices too, about the BCU mine looked good as well from outside but it had a hairline crack in the PCB, took me two weeks to find it after i spent a small fortune on various resultless troubleshootings

Im back up and running, Not 100% sure what fixed it as i did many things. I recently changes the injector loom and paul recommended cleaning all three again. I also took out the BCU and plugged it back in and checked all the wires going into the interior fuse box. After all that when i reconnected the Battery the error was gone
