Its a defender 90 300tdi 1994.

Recently i have had the transfer box+front diff changed due to both being fooked.

  • Clunking when pulling off
  • Ribrating when turning (this doesnt happen all the time)
  • When accelerating it makes a deep whinning noise (noise is quite hard to describe)

I've linked a video of the amount of play in the front propshaft, is this normal or could this be the cause of the problem? The rear prop has no movement what so ever!

Thanks in advance.

I've spoke to Andy at AW Transmissions only last week about this.

There should be no more than 7 degrees of play in any prop when a diff and transfer box are in 100% working order. Any more then this and something is worn - most likely to be play in the transfer box. Worn bearings in the diff will also cause additional noise, but shouldn't be responsible for any excess play in the prop.

Mine currently has some 45+ degrees of play, hence why it is coming off and being fully reconditioned in the next few weeks. :)

youve got to have play in axle as well as t/box to have excessive rotation in prop ,and its hard to give an exact figure as even new units vary

Yeah but even I know my current 45 degrees of play is a breakdown waiting to happen!
The massive ker-clunk as it takes up the slack going from forward to reverse and vice versa is a little bit  .

I have just bought another Transfer box for same reason as you Mark. gonna fit it then get old box reconditioned. and swap em back then recondition that box and sell it on to recover some of the costs.

I can't complain really. It's done 160k now so just showing its age a little, I guess.
Both diffs were stripped and refurbed at AW last week inc all bearings replaced, so I'm hoping once the T-box is done, it'll all be righty tighty and good to go for another 150k+.
Also hoping it'll cure the current (brand new, wide angle) front prop vibration I get when coasting. :scratching_chin:

Mines on 156k and had a hard life as a farmer/agri welders work vehicle, dragging fooked broken farm machinery outta fields so he could get a welder on em.
