I have just dug out the Service history from the hippo..

over the last 5 Years its had near on 4Kspent on it, the main one that stood out was one that was over 1K on its own.. Dating back to 2007

summerary
Gaskets and Bolts
Skimmed
injectors and other stuff..

So does this mean the head has already been done at some point. ??

If so what Gaskets have been used ?? god know .. what are expected life span of these gaskets before it has to be redone again ?

I am hoping this repair job may not be as expensive as I thought.
Yeah I had £300 set aside incase it has to be done again ..

Somebody please advise.. Obviously I wil show the machanic the sheets. see what he says aswell.. Hopefully he wont feed me with whats he want to tell me with BULL.. but the whole issuse is why would his work come with a 12mnth warrenty if it were to go again ?

Puzzled.com

Plus I went to start the hippo up this morning WOW .. had to pump the fuel peddle a few times just to get the fuel through....

so something is a MISS somewhere... its as if the Auto choke didnt come on . if it has one ..

I'm assuming you have just bought this FL. Was it private or dealer ?
If dealer, given the gear box issue and starting problems I'd take it back to them.
It's normal to get a 12 month warranty on a properly done head job.
There's is no way of knowing if this was a good job or whether it will last.
There's no auto choke

Is it a petrol K series?

Sounds like the head gasket was done in 07.

That's 8 years ago :) due another one soon if they used a standard elastomer gasket :p depending on how bothered you are, it can sometimes be best to strike preemptively.

If its struggling to start sounds like a fuelling/ignition issue. Does it stutter as it tries to start or just nothing as the engine spins over?

I would ned to look at the date... but as I recall it was done in 07... So yes i am summing it was old style gasket they used, at the time..
as for the struggling starting its only happened twice since I brought it. which was a Private sale.. the box was done around the same year ..

I have a feeling there may be a blockage somewhere.. once it starts its fine. will start over and over again after... its just the initial morning start...I only have just over a week before it gets stripped down and sorted.. so i will mention these little issues.. could also be that the head needs doing.. strugling to start first thing...

I am not to worried as I have AA Recovery Home start anyhow .. LOL..

On your offroading thread I was going to suggest you save your £300 and invest it in a diesel Freelander - would probably be money better spent!

Mind you, you could always find it needs injectors or something - then you're into more than a HG on a 1.8. 8 years between HG replacement is pretty good for a K Series.

K series should start on the button every time so there is a fault there, possibly something simple like coil packs, leads, spark plugs or distributor cap and rotor arm if it has them.
As stated 8 years for a head gasket is pretty good whichever one was fitted so keep an eye on coolant levels and watch for mayo on the dipstick. Thats how i spotted mine so didn't need head skimmed as i caught it before the engine overheated.

Yeah 8 Yrs is pretty good I'd say.. I am guessing it would be the OLD style gasket that would have been fitted back then...but saying that it also had some stretch bolts fitted at the same time. so I am guessing they would have been done as standard refitted another gasket in them days ..!!

I have also just recently found out that the pasenger footwell is damp.. so I am guessing thats where the coolant would be leaking to ..!! Hoping that is going to be a easy cheap fix.. shall mention all these problems to the machanic on the 24th..
get him to sort that out withing the price if i am lucky :p

so I am kinda looking forward but nervous aswell as to knowing what other issues he will find.. as i will ask him to give it a once over anyhow.. just to see if they are needed doing ASAP or they can wait till the cash fund has built back up ..

Over the last few days.. I have noticed that many people have these Freelander 1's

So big question is How much is to much money to be thrown at these land rovers.. ?? first time i have owned one.. Over the years.. i have Owned fords. vauxhall, megane's etc .. but have ALWAYS wanted a Landrover since I have passed my test .. but could never afford one.. but this little beast came up cheap.. with 93k on clock.. 12 month MOT... which I have a feeling was done on the naughty ..because all 4 tyers were near on ilegal side.. NSR indicator/rearlight lense has a crack init.. those a just two things which i know would have been a MOT failure.. So Part of me wants to get this hippo to a good solid state.. but other halve is thinking have a rushed into something not knowing the full history behind these known LR FL problems.. OH well you only live once.. I can now say I have owned a LANDROVER ...despite the bad reputation they may or may not have, and the slatting people give them .. Let the good times roll and bank balance fade.. LOL..

To be fair, all landrovers tend to be money pits, and even a well "sorted" one will need stuff doing to it. Depends on how much of a crap you give about niggly little things.

You can buy a disco 1 for the same price as a freelander 1 these days, but it'll have 10x the things wrong with it and you'd have to be handy with a welder.

The freelanders have their quirks, but I don't think unreasonably so when you compare them to the rest of the stable.

As to this particular one, the price of the petrols is reflected massively in the fact that theyre usually hiding faults so people don't want them. There's no such thing as a cheap petrol freelander - common thing on here is for someone to pop up and start complaining that they bought an ultra cheap K powered F1 and it needs its head gasket doing! Well, d'uh... :p

The flip side of this is the car is worth what you make it. They're awesome little runarounds that can be played with cheaply, stuff added and turned into neat little project cars. I love mine even though I get in trouble for spending more time under it than in it - but I still fight its corner.

All cars cost money every year, some more than others and Freelanders aren't the worst but at least depreciation isn't a big issue. Fix what breaks and enjoy it.

Thats my aim. Is to replace any dodgy parts. The mechanic is going to give it a once over while he has it at his...while the head gasket is getting done...among water pump, thermo and other parts..
