Looking at servicing the td4 in the next couple of weeks and come across 2 performance filters on eBay

1 k&n
2 britpart

The k&n is over a tenner more but would pay if it's Likly to be better

Use the regular one - what do you expect to gain ???
the air going into the engine is controlled by the inlet pressure being delivered by the Turbo
The fuel is controlled by the injection system

No filter is going to improve the power from the engine

Providing you change the filter according to the maintenance schedule then you will have all of the benefits without the extra cost

At least thats my opinion :)

I have the K&N filter , No real performance gain but only need to clean & oil every 5 years :)

i had a k&n .. no perceivable performance gain ..
cleaned it 'n stashed away ..
thought about trying a pipercross .. although see they also advertise a filter oil as well ..
but what would worry me .. when cleaning it .. would i get All the dirt 'n grit out ..
and not damage the filtration properties when cleaning it ..
i've a feeling that performance wise .. higher rpm petrol engines might stand to gain

~~~~~~
sidenote: a while back there were a thread regarding sluggish performance when cold ( td4 ) .. at the time noted the same with mine .. took a about a mile or two or three before responding well to the go-pedal
my last air filter change was feb. this year .. ( so cold temps. )
noted that after the filter change any hint of first-few-miles-of-sluggishness vanished
so .. probably/maybe connected to airflow over the maf sensor ..
i.e. given the somewhat extra fuel injected for a cold engine
( noted by watching the 'scangauge' litres-per-hour readout )
I bought the pipercross. Not for performance, but the fact you can wash it and put it back in.
Paid for itself already.
Yes I am a tight arse Yorkshire man.
Thinking about a pipercross for mine , I like the idea of being able to clean it yourself , any noticeable engine benefit ?
It breathes a lot better and doesn't clog up easily.
the pipercross .. do they require application of a filter oil .. like the k&n ?
( couldn't figure it from their website )
Just buy one of these from the pound shop....:)
Er. Yes. All non paper filters will pass a certain amount of debris to the engine unless there is a medium to hold it at the filter. This is why they are oiled. This oil sticks the dirt to the surface.
The K&N flows more air for longer than foam type filters.
Er no.
Instructions on mine said, take out, wash, dry put back in. I understand about oiling as have had k&n filters. This one attracted me cos you didn't have to oil it.
When my car breaks down I'll let you know;)
Your instructions might say oil isn't needed but trust me, it is. They come oiled from the factory and you can buy Pipercross cleaning kits that contain dirt retention oil ;)
Pipercross Air Filter Cleaning Kit - Dirt Retention Oil & Cleaner Additive C9000 | eBay
Without the oil, dirt passes through to the engine, of course if you don't mind your engine being ground up by an emulsion of oil and grit, then why should I. ;)
This is what dirt can do to the turbo compressor once it's got through a foam filter
That is what I thought as well.
Thanks.
Both are a waste of cash and the K&N is likely to knacker the MAF. Google K&N effects on the MAF.
The paper filter is capable of passing considerably more air than is needed to allow for degredation as it clogs.
