Passenger Door not unlocking

Hi Everyone,

We bought a Freelander TD4 at the weekend and noticed the passenger door won’t unlock with the fob, it does however lock! Which is a little frustrating

Tried the internal lock/unlock button and this doesn’t seem to work either.

Tried giving it a “gentle” tap to see if it was a little jammed, didn’t work haha

Any suggestions? Is it an expensive fix? Not had much experience working on a landie but just wondering if you can maybe un jam it? You can here the motor trying when you click the button but nothing happens
 
The lock assembly has 2 actuator motors. I used to think actuators packed in unlocking, because they ran the same single pole motor backwards to unlock, burning it out.
But, the unlock motor that tends to burn out (covered in dust and the insides dropping apart) is made by a different company to the lock motor that looks like new.
You can get a used lock assembly relatively cheap, (£10 - £50) one may last days or years. New one £80 - £100.
Easy enough to replace, the door handle linkages can be tricky.

Thank you! Found the part on eBay so going to get one ordered and have the other half fit it :D

As a new owner to a Freelander. You really should be doing the One Wheel Up Test. This is a way to check the 4X4 system is functoning correctly and not about self-distruct. Also all tyres MUST be the same make, type, size and pressure, with least worn on the rear. If not, a massive strain is put on the 4X4 system, again causing it to self-distruct.

@Se7enS1ns Thought I’d tag you since you’d know better than me, is this what you were talking about earlier, the VCU?
Tires are brand new as well aren’t they? Guy we bought it from had them changed after the MOT gave him an advisory from memory
 
Yep new tyres according to paperwork received, will give them a check / check pressures too. As per above thread will also do the one wheel test too just to tick off the VCU.
 
before you go and buy any bits...have you tried pressing the unlock button twice?
My newly acquired TD4 3 door only unlocks the drivers door with the first press of the fob then unlocks the passenger and rear door with the second press!

Yep! It’s not working at all, including when you use the internal switch as well. Only unlocks if you use the handle on the door. Been told it’s a common problem from my friend who works for Land Rover and a few people have commented the same here too. Not an expensive part to fix, so most likely order one at some point :)

Sorry to grab an old thread... I have similar problem with the front left passenger door on my FL2 except... the door is closed and locked and the emergency key doesn't won't open the door. Where to from here??

Sorry to raise an old thread again but my 51 plate Freelander TD4 rear passenger (drivers side) door locks on the fob and key, but won't unlock on the fob? It will unlock manually using the latch.
I have the door cover off already as I have to replace the window regulator (already purchased) and just wondered if it was a good idea to try and sort this unlocking problem out at the same time?
Are there any new after market parts available for the lock other than the official Landy parts at £100+, would it be possible to strip it down and repair it? Not sure what I would find inside, are there micro switches etc which could be replaced,or is it just the secondhand only option.

The small motors in the locks get a real grilling over the years. It is possible to rebuild the lock by replacing the motors, but it's a lot of messing about.

Just look for Rover 75 door locks, which are the same but considerably cheaper. ;)
 
I got new door lock motors off the bay from "proper garage type sellers" admitedly chinese ones for around £40 last year, they are probably exactly the same as the proper LR parts just without the mark up, I put 3 in with no issues although as Nodge says it takes a while i think the quickest i managed was about 2 hours all in including taking off the door card and wedging the glass of the window etc , but i was working on my own with no help and really just finding my way from advice on here plus a bit of utube and I'm not a mechanic at all ....so perhaps thats another option for you

Thanks for your post , I think due to the possible amount of work involved replacing the motors, I will possibly go a complete replacement route rather than a repair.
Did you find though when repairing your locks, you had to remove your window soluniod winding mechanism to be able to do it, or can you do it with it still in place?
